So, it was never announced to be something they were working on but a couple years ago one of the devs ( it may have been Jeff) replies to a forum post. The post was about introducing a guild/clan system in OW. The dev said it was a good idea.
So, I’m curious why nothing further was ever said or seen? It certainly would’ve been a better project to work on than the failed group finder that seems to have just been abandoned.
Last time it was mentioned, Jeff said the plan was to integrate it with the friends list and Blizzard app to be one over-arching system to play with people across multiple games.
So really, they took a simple idea and morphed it into this huge monumental task that will take years to complete instead of just throwing together a basic UI, giving us guild chat, and putting in basic guild functionality similar to Diablo 3.
The reality is that the friends list in the Blizzard app is not good for this if you play several Blizzard games and also stream. I have my actual friends, random adds I’ve picked up from 5 different games, as well as viewers from Twitch. I would need to make a spreadsheet to keep track of who plays what, and who is actually good at each game. Just being real with you, just because I played some HotS with you doesn’t mean on want you on my Overwatch competitive team.
Not to mention that people change their battle tags SUPER often. Every few months, I have to go thru my list and clear out people who I don’t know.
They really could have gone basic with this YEARS AGO and made this a much better game as a result. Yes, a lot of people won’t use it. They’ll solo queue with no guild. They might even join one and never play with their guild. But a lot of people will use it, and I suspect it will wind up being a lot like WoW guilds…where casual guilds aren’t much better than randoms, but established guilds that play together regularly will be significantly better.
