What was something you wish they kept in from OW1?

For me, I wish they had left in the player voting after the potg, as it was always a fun element that brought the community together. Also LFG should have been carried into ow2 and added a clan system.

6v6

no pay to win elements

some sort of per level award system (in place of a free lootbox)

Just 6v6 yet? Impossible, the Archives must be incomplete.

I think this was removed pretty early on during OW1 itself, but being able to stay in the same server with the same players across multiple maps unless you actively disconnected from the game

Armor packs and extra shield health from Torb and Sym. People have issues with burst damage, and while the extra health didn’t help too much against burst (it was better against sustained damage), the idea would still work well against Widow with extra tweaking.

People instead asked for these mechanics to be removed, and then went “Wow! one shots are too powerful! Nerf them too!” without connecting any dots. We had the tools to counter burst damage, and people willingly threw them away.

On that note, there was a period of time where Blizzard was just continuously nerfing things that were, in my opinion, consequences of other things that got nerfed. Its literally what ruined the game in my eyes for Overwatch 1. As weird as I think their buffing choices are nowadays, I’m glad they’re being more constructive and less destructive with Overwatch 2.

well there is always something:

  1. the player cards at the end of the game: they defined the merit of the players very fully even if they didn’t have their highlight. it would have been amazing to combine it with the victory poses.
  2. the 6v6… in arcade :point_left:. don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the 5v5, but… it was a mistake to dictate what and how the old players should have fun. and if we had had the 6v6 in arcade we would have had a much less distorted nostalgic perception in its old problems.
  3. more than anything else… the coherence of the cataloging of the skins. I speak for the skins like moira mime or kiriko terrible tornado cataloged as “legendary” just to increase the price. it’s not fair, especially since we perfectly understood that we had gained something from the 2016 controversy with mei-rry skin about how unfair this philosophy was.
  4. last but not least: OW1 competitive stats. people were very fond of those achievements.

Still don’t understand why they removed player vote cards. There was nothing but pros to it.

I guess maybe they didn’t want to budget in making a fresh version for the new UI, but it’s just one in a long list of cut corners that has diminished the player experience. Surely it couldn’t have cost that much to do.

Ow history was devs trying to fix sympthoms of a problems not the problem themselves. Which led more problems and failing to fix the OG problems.

The scrap stacking could be solved pretty easily, implementing a system like zen orb.

CC could had managed hypermobility if had lower effect on tanks. But not at level of brig at launch. Double shield wouldn’t exist if both orisa and sigma couldn’t attack and mitigate damage at same time. Making the same mistake from d.va while not following roadhog/rein limitations.

You can go on, on several points that concatenated created a ton of problems. We reached a point that sombra was strong enough to kill every tank with a single clip or less, aiming for headshots without virus, with a sole exception of d.va who wouldn’t die.

They made sombra be more oppressive than tracer and tracer itself were a problematic hero. With armor nerfs, sombra would be even more stronger, tracer would get some improvements as result also.

Invisibility, lack of tools to deal with hypermobility, more knockbacks in the game and less resistance to it. Led them to increase the damage of the game, while at same time requiring powercreeping tanks because of that. In the end… nerfing tanks again.

The queue times would be worsened again… is self-fullfiling loop without escape.

leveling up reward system. Can’t believe they still can’t add free lootboxes back.

The fact they added at least 100 new skins that are absolutely unobtainable throug gamepleay is insane and not in the good way.

I don’t like that rewards are handpicked during every event, at least with lootboxes you had the CHANCE of getting what you wanted, now its either in the battlepass or you will never get it because the skins are unaffordable.

And I’m tired of hearing people saying “rAnDom cHanCe wAs wOrsE” no it wasn’t you got also currency consistantly from lootboxes, and it took around half the time to earn the MONEY for a skin than it is now.

Now you spend 250 days to save up for 1 skin OF YOUR CHOICE from the free coins.
In OW1 you earned 200 RANDOM COSMETICS and enough currency 1 skin OF YOUR CHOICE that you wanted in 150 days.

Fortunately you got your no pay to win elements so you went 1 for 2.

So glad there’s someone who realized this!
As a Hanzo player, I remembered these things when Weaver came out. His tree functions the same way in that it will save people from Hanzo’s one-shot. I was like, “oh yeah, this was a thing before”.

I understand that ridiculous levels of sustain was and is an issue, but it was a very neat interaction.

not at all

pay to win elements were never in OW1, but were indeed added to the game being called OW2

The devs have openly admitted that the game being called OW2 was/is a pay to win game, and declared that they’d be making changes to undo this.

To their credit, they have made some changes that have made the game less strongly pay to win, but the job isnt quite finished

I feel like Sombra should have lower than average health for her hero type (flanker, harasser whatever her niche is called) because I think she should be punished hard for messing up in exchange for extreme killing potential. Like Widow is for example.

My issue with Sombra is she can deal heavy damage and escape even if you’re shooting her, and that seems wrong when you consider other heroes have to pick and choose what they do or they’ll get punished. Including the tanks with hundreds of health. Maybe its because I don’t play Sombra and so I’m ignorant to the intricacies of Sombing, but she’s just so annoying.

I remember mentioning this years ago. People begged for the game to be faster and to have defensive options removed, and then cried about dying fast. I would say “You’re literally getting what you asked for”, but people would cope.

I hope OW2 taught people that, sometimes, heroes need a certain thing because the lack of that thing could throw the whole game’s balance out of whack.

Name the pay to win element currently in OW2? I can wait but I know you won’t have one.

By the way the historical definition of Pay to Win that has been used is paying money to get an advantage a free player reasonably cannot obtain. That never really existed outside of QP for the first 2 weeks of a season but let’s take it a step further: what advantage does a paid player have NOW over a free one? Again I can wait.

The devs themselves openly admitted that the game being called OW2 was pay to win right from the start

They never said that and again you still have not named a single thing currently in the game that is pay to win. Are you saying a name is now pay to win? That is your big example. Having a name you do not like is the definition of pay to win? Short of that you still have not named a single thing currently in the game that even by the vaguest interpretations of the definition could be considered pay to win.

except they did

if you do not accept that the game being called OW2 was at bare minimum a pay to win game at the outset, there is no point in continuing this side conversation

I miss lootboxes.

a pretty decent chance for a free skin by trying out a role you may not play often, or just by playing for a while. god I miss it.

also a personal pet peeve, I think gold guns looked much better and stood out more in OW1’s engine
