i always found it to be a good name, are we only saying this because of the thing.

Actually I think that line woudl still work even if the name gets changed. In fact, it will be more literal than ever.

Regardless of what the real person did, jesse mccree seems like quite the fitting name for a cowboy. Probably why they used his name for that specific hero.

Its too bad mccree never had any unique voiceline for if he was there and nearby when the robot said it.
