What is the whisper function and what does it do?

I noticed that when I click on a friend and it asks me what to do that there is a whisper tab as one of the options. What’s the function behind this option? Is it similar to spectate?

Private message. The term “whisper” dates all the way back to the first game on Battle.Net, Diablo 1.

It makes sure only you and your friend can see it, I use it for messaging my friends to see if they want to play

It’s a PM.

Once, someone wanted to be my friend, so I added him. Then, he whispered me some insults and unfriended me. :man_shrugging:

He was like:

  1. Add someone to your friend list
  2. Whisper some insults
  3. Refuse to elaborate further
  4. Leave

Interesting. Without diving into their extensive 1115-post history, I honestly can’t tell if OP is likely trolling or not (though I am leaning on this being a joke thread, given the hour).

  • On one hand: to have seriously only just now discovered the whisper function after playing long enough to have achieved an account level of 1300 (gold + one star) seems remarkably far-fetched.
  • On the other hand: they are Endorsement Level 5, which means it is possible they might never have had friends in the game before to group with to experience the whisper feature. Grouping with friends does work against you when trying to maintain a high endorsement level since it results in reduced endorsements (friends can't endorse friends; teammates are more likely to endorse each other than enemy players, and friends occupy valuable teammate slots that would otherwise be filled with random players who would typically be providing endorsement votes).

I can assure you I’m not trolling. I play on PS4 so this likely was not a feature for us before crossplay was added. Much of our private messaging was done through the PSN profile.

I do also want to point out that there have been functions that were once not included in the console versions of OW. One big example was the report feature which was not included for console until either season 8 or sometime before the LFG and endorsement system addition. Even now with crossplay and chat being available for all platforms now, consoles for some reason are unable to disable chat filter.
