equal representation is just not going to happen…people WILL settle on the “best” tank combo and that’s what we’re going to play…it happens ALL the time…and more than likely it’s goin go to be extremely dive-y, very brawly, or very barrier heavy (cause that’s how tanks break down pretty much)
I honestly struggle to think of a tank combo that people haven’t hated…we seem to constantly rotate through “I can’t stand it when tank X is strong”
So what exactly is the tank lineup you want to see that’s simultaneously fun to play and not a problem for everyone else
Winston is one, because he struggles when there’s too much spam damage, healing, AoE heals or CC, so he should be meta, because then it means those things are not excessive.
I kinda think we always have though…I know at least when I play some maps I’m definitely thinking specific tanks that aren’t necessarily the “strong” ones…
(Off topic - Map based pick/win rates by the way are something I wish overbuff did)
I don’t think that’s true at all, meta-wise a comp always dominates regardless of map, even when the meta is new and ever changing, like Giga Hog in teh playoffs, there’s not map-based variation.
Also I think for that to truuuuuuuuly happen that maps would have to be severely different…we have lots of maps and 4 different game modes but I don’t think the maps themselves are all that different from one another
Maybe push will help but I think for true map based variety they need to be drastically different with clearly defined advantages for particular abilities
I want every tank to have a seat at the table somewhere. There’s only 8 of them, not nearly as hard as DPS. Just give every tank maps they’re good on and maps they’re bad on, and then give me a community that learns there’s more than one main tank.
Doesn’t have to be good for only Winston, it would also be good for Hammond.
But we need maps that favor dive over brawl, and maps that favor Rush over Bunker, and maps where Bunker or poke are good and viable, or even maps with multiple elements in them like Havana.
There have to be maps where Deathball and press W are suicide. We had some of those in 2cp, but Blizzard bowed to player pressure and removed two of them.
Orisa and Sigma were NOT the most popular combo, in fact, the two top tanks were both main tanks who didn’t synergize and instead brought up their offtanks. Of the three offtanks that paired with the main tanks, Sigma was the last.
Because the two top tanks were pretty much never picked together, you didn’t get constant mirror matches, instead it’s offense versus defense comps. You only had to fix Winston to bring in the rest of the dive tanks.
When they nerfed Orisa, Reinhard lost a rival and the top two tanks became Reinhardt/Zarya and ladder went into Rein/Zar prison for practically the entire 2020.
What you think how the absolute top tiers play cannot be applied to the rest of the playerbase.
Doubleshield pre nerfs was the time when you had the most tank variety on ladder. Pre-forced 2-2-2, GOATS was when you had the most tank variety. Both times only the absolute top were affected by the meta while the rest of the playerbase had options. Every time the game’s rebalanced for the 1%, the playerbase is the one that gets screwed over.
