I quite literally have been struggling with this since OW2. I try not to one trick, but on console at least. What can you do to get yourself to go above gold.
I have only ever reached plat one time and that was it. I want to dig out but how do I do it??
If you are diamond, it should be relatively easy to climb out of gold. That’s the only way I have ever managed it. If you are platinum, good luck. That ain’t happening.
Dont use the scorecard for anything except tracking ults. Numbers dont equal performance. Ive won many games on tracer/ ball where i had less than 10 kills but we had easy win because i kept 1/2 their team chasing me all game. And simply having a widow or sombra changes enemies entire playstyle even if they dont get too many kills.
Prioritize living. In an objective based game it doesnt matter if you have 50 kills if you end up losing the point by feeding when it matters.
Learn how to maximize ult charge. Unless there is a large skill gap between teams, then ults normally have the biggest effect on capturing a point. Choose a few characters and really learn how much ult charge you actually get from landing your cooldowns vs base healing/dmg. Example reinhardt get ridiculous ult charge from fire strikes so either use them early enough that they will be back by the time you get close, or save them until you are close enough to guarantee that they will both hit, missing one firestrike can be the difference in getting ult in time for a cap. Similar number differences for every character. One of the main differences between low rank fights vs high rank isnt the K/D but rather how many ults you can farm per game.
Positioning is always important. High ground, off angles, escape routes to rotate out. Learn the maps inside out including healpack locations. Find spots they wont expect you where you have better cover.
Never stagger. If most of youre team dies it usually better to kill yourself and regroup. Not only does it give you better odds in the next fight, but they dont get free ult charge from killing you.
Always keep a good mental. Toxic teamates and getting frustrated are the biggest enemies in a comp game. They are adding option to mute specific teamates in new season which should help with toxicity, but anytime you are getting frustrated take a break or quit for the day so you dont lose unnecessary matches and slow down rank up progress.
For gold specifically the best advice i could give is to try and master high mobility heroes. No offense intended but in gold people dont tend to have the best aim or colldown management. And if they swap to counter you just forget about killing them and focus on distracting instead until your team can pick off the rest. On support heal who you can, but again prioritize living. Dont get yourself killed trying to save somebody who is out of position. In higher ranks you can get away with doing a lot more damage since everyone has better positioning, but in gold you will probably need to focus mainly on healing most of the time, but if you see an enemy low its better to help finish them first
as much as i hate to say this, because i despise it…but…blizzard made this game to where it’s MUCH more difficult to climb as a solo queue player.
to climb most efficiently, you NEED to play with a regular team
I would like to know as well. I was Gold 5 (role queue tank) the other day then won 9 games in a row as Doomfist & am only now Gold 3.
Ran 10 games total with only 1 loss as 99% Doomfist main, only switched in maybe 2 of the games eventually where it became necessary due to heavy heavy counters.
With the quality of team skills on this game I think you may need to be of a much larger skill tier to surpass Gold/Platinum, for the most part you can’t carry some of these Gold games unless you have a large skill set.
Cant speak for tank but as a support what helped me most was learning hiw to duel. The rest came with experience. I practiced dueling in deathmatch while in Q. Just picked Ana and did my best. Was it unfair and painful? Yes but I did eventually end up in masters
Playing tank? Go zarya and stick to playing zarya. Low ranks, everyone is trigger happy, you will be charged 99% of the time. If they go bastion then go hog, if they have ana and shes focusing you then go sigma or back to zarya if you learn how to play around corners. As for healers? Play bap or illari and go on a killing spree. Once you reach plat you can start playing zen. The biggest secret to climbing ranks is killing more and dying less. Dying less is definitely the bigger one. Dont be afraid to make space as a tank but learn to respect certain dps that could melt you down. Dont be afraid to get your own kills as a support, there is a reason supports are currently in a really good spot. Bap and illar are literally better dps than most dps in the game due to their abilities. Hope this helps
That is your problem, and that’s the secret to getting to the next rank.
Think of it this way, the more characters you play, the slower you will climb. When you play characters your less or not familiar with, the more likely your going to underperform which leads to more losses.
Say 1 person who plays a character over and over again for 200 hours, it can be any character but it has to be the same, and then you have another person who decides to learn the whole roster and divides those 200 hrs over all the 41 characters. Well that’s less than 5 hours per character. Who’s going to find it easier climbing out of gold? Probably the person who has 200 hrs on the same character because he’s probably better then a person who has 5 hours on the character.
People get in this mindset that overwatch is a “swap to counter” game, the reality is no it is not. Yes there are counters, i’m not an idiot. But you know the S in SR doesn’t stand for “Swap Rating” it stands for “Skill Rating”. You develop skills by mastering a character and learning fundamentals, that’s how you climb.
