I’ve been seeing lots of diamond players grouped up with unranked players in my comp games lately. Are unranked players allowed to group up with anyone they want regardless of their SR and play comp, and vice versa?
Unranked can group with anyone that isn’t Masters or GM
So does it matter if that unranked player finished last season in Bronze or GM, same rule applies?
If they had an SR rating last season, then they’ll be placed in matches with people near the same SR, adjusted behind the scenes for each subsequent win/loss during placements. You won’t see their SR, it’s a factor, “under the hood.”
If they’ve never played comp before at all, then the game uses a hidden “MMR” rating, based on performance in quickplay and other modes, to determine which ranks to match that player with until it can determine their actual SR rating, after placements. MMR can move independently of SR, which is where things get confusing for me.
If they finished last season at Bronze, they should not be matched with Diamond/Plat/Masters. It’ll be close to, but not exactly, 500 SR in either direction from their ending SR last season. But that adjusts behind the scenes as they complete their placements, so it’s not EXACTLY ±500 SR. It’ll fluctuate a little as they win and lose placements, until all 10 placements are done.
I understand this, but I’m talking about groups (stacks) playing together consisting of both ranked and unranked players. I personally think you shouldn’t be allowed to group with anyone if you’re not yet ranked.
I’d have to look, but unless they changed it, I am like 90% certain it is diamond and up that can not play with anyone who has not yet done their 10 placements.
Screenshot below is an example of what I’m referring to:

Everyone in a group has to be w/in 1000 SR of each other. Like MetalHead said, if they have done comp before it’s based on their SR for last season, if they haven’t the game use MMR to rank them.
SR pretty much carries over from one season to the the next so even an unranked player in a game is still ranked by the game, it’s just not visible.
Even if they’ve never been ranked before, if the matches they have played thus far have given them an MMR that’s high enough, then yes, they could end up in diamond matches while unranked. Not sure about GM, or if there’s an upper limit to which ranks they can play with in this scenario. As far as Blizz is concerned, if their first few matches show that they can run with Diamond players, then Overwatch’s matchmaker will treat them as Diamond players until they demonstrate, repeatedly, that they don’t belong there.
At least I think so.
Techinally yes, but it will queue into the group SR. So for an example for this case, if a Master and Plat do placements together, they will most likely play in Diamond games.
Yea, I think it is.
