In real sports, in time-based games, when the time runs out and the score is tied, the mechanic of overtime is invoked so that it’s possible to get an unambiguous score.
In OW, in most modes, the attacking team is given a timeframe to accomplish a task. If OW worked like those other games, when that time ran out, the match would end. But for some reason, in OW, when the time runs out, the game arbitrarily gives the attacking team more time because reasons. Why doesn’t the match just end when the time runs out? Who cares if the attacking team is on the point? If they didn’t capture it, they didn’t capture it. If they get extra time to capture it, why isn’t that time just given to them to begin with?
What’s the purpose of overtime? It’s not to work out who “really” won. We know who won – the defending team. They held the point for the amount of time required. Overtime in OW is a goalpost-moving trick that serves no purpose but to prolong the match.
Edit: To clarify, I’m aware overtime can benefit the attackers if they cap the point early and hold onto it. It doesn’t change the point.
If overtime didn’t exist, wouldn’t the game just become whoever could stall the point the best? You’d never have to beat the enemy team, just whittle their timebank away until the game instantly ends.
It would pretty much ruin every game mode. So yeah. That’s the purpose of overtime.
It would be so stupid to win the fight and lose the game simply because the time ran out when you were 1 metre/second away and all the enemies were dead.
There are already competitive features which reward capping quickly/penalise being slow. It’s not like scraping by in overtime is gonna give them 4 mins on the clock next round.
That happens now. I’ve played many games where we lost because we were just about to step onto point and time runs out. Overtime just moves when that happens.
Not really. Currently, if you’re good at stalling you’ll still have to clear the point at some point. Without overtime you just have to get the time to 0. It becomes entirely about stalling instead of stalling being helpful in some situations.
Sounds like CSGO/Valorant. Still salty about the 4k clutch that I got yesterday only to die to disarming the spike at 80%
In Football (or soccer) a referee won’t end the game while one of the teams is on the offensive as in actively trying and are close to possibly scoring, I think OT is the same thing, it’s like the last ditch grace on control points and on payloads they are still actively pushing/attacking.
The defenders are still there in traditional sports, you are still in an all out offensive. Simply making it back to the objective to end the round is a terrible mechanic.
I just want them to remove the 3 second rule. You want OT, you be on the point. Not touch it 3 seconds before it the time ends. Or properly add this to every game mode, and not just 2 CP.
That’s happening now. Often, we run up to the point near the end of the match only for the game to end moments before we step on. All overtime seems to do is allow one team to continue refreshing it by trickling on and resetting the timer. Is that fun for people?
