To me, it’s definitely the personality. It’s a very subjective thing, and people will find my favorites obnoxious, but I love Junkrat for his silliness (and his accent !), Tracer for her liveliness, and Mercy for her selflessness / goodness. For Cassidy, it’s not his personality per se, but I work with horses and I’m a big fan of the Old West. And Kiriko I love because… I… personal reasons
But if I had to choose only 2, it would be Rat and Tracer. I think we need more “Bon Voyage” and “Cheers, love” type of heroes in this game !
I used to main Symm back in OW1 and it was because she was so elegant and classy. Got lucky that she got reworked so often so it didn’t get stale.
Now in OW2 I play all the heroes regardless of their personalities. It’s a habit I got from Genshin Impact- to play everyone to get more value from the game. It’s a bonus that I like Echo so copying isn’t a hassle if you can maneuver the entire roster.
Looks hook me, and personality plays a role in enjoyment, but kit is what really keeps me around. It’s why I’m a Level Sixty-Something Donut Girl. If it’s a bad time to Kiku, it’s a bad time to Overwatch.
Survivability and aiming. If I don’t have to aim and land shots I get bored very quickly, and if my character dies too easily, with all of the incredibly easy damage this game has, it gets too annoying.
I can’t play characters like Rein or Mercy, for example, because they put me to sleep. I chose Mei because of her icicle and because the two people I used to play with played Pharmacy. If the guy who played Phara didn’t get heals pretty much non-stop, he’d let you know about it. I found Mei and her iceblock and icicle, and said yep that’s for me.
Lately I’ve been playing Ashe, her shotgun gives me some survivability and I like that it’s an aim based character. Though she could use more ammo, 12 shots isn’t really enough considering the huge drop off in damage past a certain range. Sometimes you’ll shoot a Pharah or a Widow and can barely see the amount of health that was removed, even with a headshot.
Playstyle and overall strength. I’m a team player before anything else, so I hate playing heroes who have ‘solo carry’ potential. If I’m not working with teammates to make plays, I get bored.
By overall strength I mean I refuse to play heroes who feel OP, so I tend to avoid anything even close to feeling broken or cheap, even if it means I drop in rank. I honestly don’t understand how anyone actually has fun playing something overpowered (in any game, not just OW).
Strength varies with time and skill level, most of the personalities are one note (even if that note is enjoyable), aesthetics an be changed with skins.
Mercy, Tracer, D.Va all fun to me because most of their kit is zoom+“shoot”. If I invested any real time in understanding and utilizing Lucio rollouts and general Wallriding skill he’d probably be right up there too. I want to throw Echo in too, despite her being more cooldown reliant than the other 4.
Doomfist: Black like me, Nigerian like me, leader of an organisation with super cool uniforms, used to be a powerful DPS and plays like an anime character out of Dragon Ball Z (love shonen anime with good fights and Dragon Ball is my favourite ever since I was a kid. Even tried to go super saiyan before)
It’s mainly the reload time that I feel difficult to deal with, personally, not the number of ammo. It’s true that at longer ranges, her gun feels a bit weak. That’s when you’re supposed to play Widow, I guess
So, Roadhog then ? Perfect for you
But I understand. I have certain preferences too, which is why I like Kiri (and for her kit, too, obviously, but it’s not what drew me to her).
That’s really interesting ! I don’t play heroes because they’re strong, generally, but I’m tempted to do so sometimes. Why is it you don’t enjoy playing them when they’re strong ? Does it feel that you’re taking advantage, or not earning your rewards ?
Oh yeah, I agree. I just don’t have the patience though… But when you see the Froggers and Eskays out there, it is tempting !
I started as a Zen main solely because he looked cool and i liked the glass cannon style (he was still 150hp back then)
Became a Mercy Main for a while bc I didnt like Lucio and wasn’t good at Ana
Shortly before the moth meta i decided to main Rein and Monkey because I was tired of getting coward tanks, so i did it myself, and Ive been one since. Though these days I play Mauga and Doomfist more.
