What is the job of the dps player?

It’s not my intention to attack players of this role, I just want to know what is a reasonable expectation for people who play this role.

Like main tanks, it’s reasonable to expect them to stay with their team, create useable space and not feed in the process.

Offtanks, it’s reasonable to expect them to cover the main tanks and peel for the supports when necessary.

Main support, it’s reasonable to expect them to position themselves in an a way that allows them to heal their allies and mostly keep the tanks alive.

Off support, is reasonable to expect them to heal the main support and provide utilities to the team when possible.

What are the expectations of DPS?

Based on my teammates in voice, they expect me to carry them, create space for the tanks so they can push and survive off of health packs because the healers are busy pocketing the tanks. Oh, and kill everyone with my ultimate every other fight and maintain gold elims against a Moira.

My expectations for myself? Try and get key picks and capitalize on the space being made for me.

Apply pressure on key target, work with and not against the team, punish mistakes, respect and utilize what the team provides, focus targets

You could say dps are meant to counter?

Theres a lot more switching between heros in the dps category than they are with other two classes.

  1. Don’t die.
  2. Be where you need to be when you need to be there.
  3. Kill things. Support > DPS > Off-Tank > Main Tank.

Come on. I don’t want this to be hostile. I just want to see if there is a consensus on this particular topic.

Well, in my personal opinion, DPS is seperated by two categories. Those are Flankers and Zoners.

Flankers: Their job is to kill a key target that’s going to bring a mass advantage to your team by cutting off their resources. They also can be a distraction so that the tanks can have an easier time pushing forward. A good example would be Genji, Tracer, Doomfist, Sombra, etc.

Zoners: Their job is to deny a space that is vital for the enemy. They can also ease the tanks job to creates space. They are basically tanks but their main job is to deny space where your tanks can’t reach. The example of these are Mei, Junkrat, Symmetra, Widow, Hanzo, etc.

There’s so many jobs for the DPS.

To put it simply, I’d say the main thrust of their focus would be to ‘Win the Fight’. But that’s not very descriptive of how they go about it, and i think that’s because a lot of heroes have different methods for how they do what they do.

Ex. Mei - Get in your face and slow people to a halt so that the rest of your team can get the easy picks. Hanzo - help your team break down barriers, click heads and use angles that both avoid the other team’s damage angles, but enable your team to take the space. Doomfist, pop in and out of enemy controlled space. Try to nearly instant-drop squishies, and if you can’t do that, then put the enemy tank out of position so that they’re vulnerable and aren’t able to defend the rest of their team - prioritizing survival and elims as your focus.

Carry obvs

Nah really it’s to put pressure, deny areas and punish mistakes. A lot of DPS have extra utility too though for example Mei can use wall and veto to block ults, Sombra can deny cooldowns, health packs, Genji can deflect large amounts of damage back at the enemy. Overall I’d say DPS brings utility or variation that makes the other roles jobs easier whilst giving the team an extra dimension.

That does make it difficult to know who to use and when. But isn’t that all the more reason to have multiple characters you can play within that role? Seems like dps role requires swapping more than any other.

just stay alive and deal damage consistently

You mean like, attacking and defending heros? Seems familiar.

Also being the only one to switch if the team needs a specific hero, don’t you dare ask for other tanks than Roadhog and Wrecking Ball.

They are. And that’s why DPS has rarely been a meta defining character as they usually is picked on which supports/tanks they are best paired or against with.

See the current meta, Mei and Reaper is excellent when they work with Orisa and Sigma, but there’s DF that can go really well against them. All the while Sigma and Orisa is the meta defining character.

Yeah, that basically it. Similar to paladins, if you played it.

No its similar to OW. The dps used to be split up between attacking and defending heros. But was later removed because the devs didn’t realise people would main heros. So people got annoyed when people played defence heros on attack.

I mean, Overwatch and Paladins are really, really similar with each other.

I think meta limit is more accurate. Tanks don’t have a lot of variety and their pairing is more limited than any other role. Either give tanks more independence or more variety then metas would be more fluid.
