like do you just shoot things, like is that really an important enough job to keep the dps role?
i just don’t see the point.

I enjoy dps because i enjoy getting kills and doing damage. Often you end up in a 1v1 situation against one of the enemy dps, which is exciting
It’s in the name…
And yet the DPS role has never wanted for players. Shooting things in a first person shooter is pretty fun, as it turns out.
Their job is to be good at applying damage. They typically have easier time dealing damage than other roles or have access to high burst. You either have mobility, long range or high damage, that’s the dps for you. You trade utility (usually, stuff like Mei exists) for easiness of dealing damage and high burst potential. Even when supports have stuff like Baptiste who have plenty of kill pressure, Bap is a lot worse at getting final blows than his dps counterpart S76. Why? Because he doesn’t have Helix rockets for that burst damage spike.
I don’t think that the job is just to do dmg, that’s almost the task of tanks by now.
Dps is more for bringing the dmg to the right target at the right time.
Because just pressing dmg on the tank doesn’t help in the end
Pressuring high value targets, bursting people down, and forcing cooldowns. A glass cannon version of the Tank role with the most versatile playstyles in the game.
dps job is to get kills to sway the fight and for tanks to move in
To do Damage Per Second
Damage heroes seek out, engage, and obliterate the enemy with wide-ranging tools, abilities, and play styles. Fearsome but fragile, these heroes require backup to survive.
When in doubt, the Official Page provides the answer.
They can do controlled burst-damage, but it isn’t easier to deal damage with them compared to other roles.
Stuff like Mei, and utility used to (and still, partially does) belong to the old Defense-role.
Baptiste is built for sustained damage, Soldier is built for burst-damage. Soldier will more quickly kill targets than Baptiste will, because his controlled burst is Helix Rocket.
Tanks were supposed to be rare in the original Overwatch design. You were only supposed to have one per team due to their popularity or lack thereof. But Tanks were always aimed being strong area effect attackers with powerful defensive tools.
Tanks tend to be more diverse; you can take a look at the Damage-role and pool a lot of heroes into particular pools or styles. You can’t really do that with Tanks. But glass-cannon is an appropriate description.
Dps’s job is to take advantage of supprots abilities you job is to work around your team not with your team
Tanks need to move in first to create the space for dps, not the other way around.
I mean yes, tanks move in the make the space. But it’s infinitely easier to do that if they are down a team member. Which is why I said they move in once the fight is swayed in their favor. (this is lower elo btw)
Pressure. Their job is to provide pressure for tanks to do their work.
See back in the day when this game wasnt dog water infused with cat piss, DPS was the only role that did consistent damage at range, outside of very select few exceptions like Zen.
Nowadays though almost every tank is a midrange powerhouse thats consistently able to match the damage of both DPS players if not double, and all supports that arent Illari, Kiriko, Bap, and Ana arent really allowed anymore unless youre Mercy, because she just makes the tank do more more damage.
Roles no longer matter because everyone is a DPS. the 5v5 brawl rework was a mistake and Blizzard will never revert it because it almost made them put in effort to do, even to this half done extent, and undoing it would be like admitting to a mistake.
And Blizzard would never make a mistake. Give them your money.
If u play mei ur role is the offtank
Only if you have no idea how mei or tanks function.
Idk man, a zone of death where u deal high dps and slow that people should avoid
An ability that can block ult, mitigate damage, and deny space
An ult that denies space and applies hard cc
Why does a Class Based Shooter need MMORPG style “jobs”?
DPS don’t do anything unique, actually. They are the reject role, have been for a long time.
