What is the in-game relevance of Ilios?

Honest question. Most, if not all, other maps have some tie to either a hero, a major organization, or a significant event in the game’s story. But Ilios? It isn’t related to any of these.

While yes, it could be argued to have some significance to Talon due to the shared statues with Chateau Guilliard, that’s a pretty big stretch to justify its inclusion in game.

So, does anyone know why it’s included? Or, is there a reason that we have yet to see (like an upcoming hero or story mission)?

I personally am hoping for a Greek hero, because I speak some Greek and would love to see some of it spoken in game.

I like the intro music to ilios. The Greek hero idea is cool

I’m not entirely sure of its lore connection, but its beautiful…

Lighthouse has Widowmaker’s Cote D’azur sunglasses, and she has her spawn voiceline : “Hmm, I remember and eventful vacation here” which plays on all three maps.

Petra background details (I think it’s a laptop in one of the rooms?) reveal correspondence between a ‘Ioannidis’ and a ‘Faisal’ who discuss a team of archeologists currently working on the Illios ruins and have high hopes they will find something.

Then there’s the statues which you pointed out. My best guess is Talon need something in those ruins? Did they steal the statues to start an international conflict?

In any case there is set up for something to happen there, we just don’t know what quite yet

I think that one can be an exception, because it was meant to be an homage to Blizzard moreso than provide insight into the game’s setting.

Ilios is Ancient Greek for “Hey, let’s build a city around this hole in the ground without covering it up.”

Paris doesn’t have a tie to a specific hero either. Sure, Widowmaker is French, but the map that’s tied to her is Chateau, not Paris.

Also Hollywood isn’t tied to any specific character.

yea but illios isn’t tied to any hero at all. widow has two maps tied to her and the first one sucks and the other is a FFA map.

It’s for lucio, he wants to live there for obvious reasons

i mean, d.va did star in a movie there, and she has a star on the hollywood walk of fame.

Ah, such high praise… thank you! You are, too!

That’s not much of a lore tie-in though. Nothing related to Overwatch and fighting the omnics and all that. Her tie-in map is Busan.

Hollywood and Blizzard World also have no real connection to the lore. I think its just that it looks good and fit with the game’s design direction of being diverse in its settings.

i just want to know why there is a bottomless pit on the well map, did they put it there on purpose. one of the reasons for my hate for road, lucio and the hamster

There is a lore reference to Ilios, in either spawn room/dropship, walk up to the cockpit and listen for Athena’s voice. One of the lines spoken mentions Talon is after the rare artifacts on the island and apparently there is a “significant discovery” made on one of the dig sites.

The payload is carrying an Omnic director (who complains A LOT) who’s life has been threatened and you are to escort (or stop the escort) the payload to safeguard the director.

Blizzard wrote themselves and Blizzard World into the lore. Many characters have voicelines to support the map (especially Brigitte). Note that in the Overwatch universe, Blizzard never created an Overwatch game. The purpose of the mission is to escort a 20-year crown (something that Blizzard team members earn after 20- years of service to the company).

Its mostly a tribute to this iconic movie…

There was even an arcade brawl back in the day called “This is Ilios” where it was nothing but Hogs and Lucios played on Well.

By which of course I mean accurate to the movie 300…
