What is rendering scale?

i used to play the game on low with 30fps, and since brig came out i started having drops.
yesterday i reinstalled the game (since they said we had to) and was surprised to see the main menu lagging? went to decrease rendering scale down to 75% and since i play alot of paladins i didnt have eyes cancer.
the game plays great with no drop whatsoever.
can anyone explain what it is? texture related?

Rendering scale is about how clear you see models in the game.

For example, as I started on laptop years ago ( an old one ) and the rendering scale was 55 %, I couldn’t see heads clearly at all, they were blurry and kinda just pixel.

Once I got on desktop the game was running at 100 % rendering scale and it was like playing a whole different game. You can see silouetes and heads clearly, finally was able to play hitscans and snipers.

It’s really important in my opinion.

Your graphic gets uglier the lower your rendering scale.
Les render scale = more fps.

Rendering scale changes the ingame resolution to a lower or higher one without changing the current screen resolution.
Setting that to, lets say 50% on 1080p res, it means that the game’s engine is rendering in real time at 540p and thus, the game will run smoother.
The only things that rendering scale have no effect are to things that are out of the rendering engine, like the UI.

It’s the thing I had to turn down in order to play the game at 70FPS, but it was weird because it was fine at high render scale for like a year

Renderscale sets the resolution of the 3D scene without having to change the actual resolution to something else than the native resolution of your monitor.

For example if you use 1440p resolution (preferably with an 1440p monitor) with 75% renderscale then the 3D scene is basically rendered in 1080p (75% of 1440p), then scaled up to 1440p, then the crosshairs/hud/menus are drawn in 1440p before the whole thing is put on your screen.

For the above reason it’s a good idea to always keep your resolution the same as the native resolution of your monitor (to have crisp crosshairs/hud/menus) and lower only the renderscale and/or other video settings if necessary.

The crosshairs/hud/menus aren’t gpu intensive things compared to the 3D scene so lowering the resolution of those would not result in significantly lower gpu usage, only blurred text, crosshairs, etc…

Note that lower resolution is very noticeable on text, lines and simple drawn shapes that make up a significant part of the hud and menus. In contrast rendered 3D scenes are usually less sensitive to downscaling when it comes to perceived quality. A very low renderscale (like 50%) will make the edges of rendered objects noticeably thick this is why I don’t like to go below 75% or AUTO/66%. Instead of setting a very low renderscale it’s a better idea to lower some other settings too if necessary.

Rendering scale renders the game world at a lower resolution than the monitors actual scale. So if you’re running at 1080p with a 50% render scale, the game will render at 540p then upscale the image to 1080p.

It’s a way to isloate none graphic intensive parts of the game. HUD etc. are left at your monitors resolution. But scales down the 3D parts. It’s basically the reverse of upscaling.

It’s the percentage of your resolution.

100% at 1080p is 1080p.
50% is 540p
