What is "game-sense"?

I don’t get it. I came from a game where situational awareness and map awareness, that game had a map, was important. And I have an intuitive understanding of those concepts. But I don’t understand game sense. I want to improve it but I don’t know what it is.

idk it’s like that element of sixth sense. like knowing what someone is going to do before they do it, to the point that once yours is good enough a lot of fights play out like a choreographed dance routine.

Non-mechanical skill. It includes situational awareness, map awareness, ult tracking, etc.

In overwatch?

Being aware of where you’re teammates and enemies are…cooldown/ult usage…target priority…when to push…when to switch…knowing when you’re not being useful to team…etc

Eh… i dont know how to explain it but ill try:

Knowing whats happening around you
Who´s dead, who´s not
Guessing if enemy has Ult
Predicting the enemies next move
Knowing the map from top to bottom
Knowing what abilities have been used (such has Zarya´s bubbles)
Knowing where your team and the enemy are
Knowing when to push and when to retreat

Its just a lot of stuff

In short: Having great timing.

For instance, you can have great map awareness, but have bad game sense. Meaning you know your way around a map and your opponents positioning, but you don’t know when to take the high ground compared to the low ground, when to push your opponents, or when to pull back. It’s the difference between knowledge and talent.

Understanding the progression of other heroes throughout the match.
Like knowing when a McCree should be returning to the fight, if he’s going to have time to set up a high-ground deadeye, or if he has it.
Knowing you can take duels with an inconsistent dps player and punish their inconsistency.
Gamesense is basically just knowing how the game works beyond positioning and aim.

I always assumed game sense meant anything that didn’t involve mechanical interaction. Ie. Positioning, ult tracking, etc.

Being aware of team and opponent positions, advantages and disadvantages those positionings allow based on the comps of each respective team in relation to the tactical advantage and disadvantages of the physical terrain that is relevant.

Keeping tabs on cooldowns, both friendly and opponent- understanding the many complex interactions those abilities have with all the other heroes in the game, and the windows that are open or closed based on those abilities.

Understanding when to use said abilities or save them. For example using an ult to win an already won team fight. “Oh they only have baby dva left and we killed the other 5, let’s use dragon blade to make sure she’s dead”.

Being aware of friendly and opponent health values- knowing who to defend and why when necessary.

On and on.

Basically game sense is another way of saying game smarts. It’s using your brain to observe, and make the best tactical decision available.

it’s knowing where you installed your game, i think

I call it sixth sense, the force (StarWars fan here)
It is natural ability to predict in-game events, which allows you to react faster / apply countermeasures.

It is developed by experience, when player automatically, unconsciously makes notes in his mind.
Just my opinion.

That’s game sense.

Ow game sense has to factor in ults and cooldowns too.

Also disappointed I’m only person so far to mention knowing when to switch…

It’s part of the game people…it’s ok to not just play 1 thing!!

Game knowledge basically.

Game sense is really just everything that makes one player better than another, that doesn’t fall under the category of mechanical execution.

It is awareness, map knowledge, hero knowledge, understanding team compositions, positioning, understanding ult usage and economy all rolled into 2 words.

There are 2 very good videos for you to watch:

Positioning:

Gamesense:

I am not him, but I will gladly plug for him as these videos were very helpful for me when I first started.

Game sense is knowing that about a minute into a match when a Genji dashes straight up it probably means he’s gonna nanoblade.

Or when a Reaper wraiths straight into the middle of your team, it probably means he’s gonna blossom.

It’s the things you mentioned, positioning, ult tracking, keeping track on whos dead and whos alive, who has the advantage/disadvantageous, knowing when a fight is lose or won, basic awareness that so and so is right next to you, etc. It’s basically what you would guess it is.

Game sense is pretty much the entire game outside of aiming; yet aim is still perceived to be what “skill” is somehow.
