What is considered being boosted

now i play with a couple of my friends which are gold/ plat and im silver and ive been accused of being boosted where i just play with them because we work well as a team, so im wondering what exactly is being boosted
edit; am i considered getting boosted

Boosted /should/ mean that someone played with a team (especially if they’re the ‘weakest link’) and was brought up to a higher rank than they deserved because they wouldn’t have been able to reach that rank on their own merit.

Boosted in Overwatch means anyone that isn’t playing perfectly/carrying the team because you decided not to heal the Genji solo diving the entire enemy team as a Mercy.

Edit: That said, this is a team based game. If you and your team reached a certain rank, then it isn’t really boosted, unless you are so far behind your team in terms of skill that you’re actually holding them back.

ive also heard that some people pay for someone to use their account to achieve a higher rank

That’s certainly another form of boosting. But again, it falls under the description of reaching a rank you wouldn’t have otherwise under your own merit.

But as I said, ‘boosting’ in Overwatch is more often used as an insult by people with zero gamesense thinking they’re the gods’ Gift to Gaming.

I’ve seen people in high bronze getting called out as being boosted.

It’s when you can only climb with groups and then lose all your sr when you solo.

In a group of friends they’re just joking but being boosted basically means getting carried. It’s usually used to describe support players because DPS ‘carry’ them every game.

If you can only climb when you’re grouped with friends but lose SR when you solo, that’s a pretty good indicator you are not punching your weight at that rank

as it turns out, playing with your friends is frowned upon by the overwatch community.
We have adopted a ranked system very similar to the indian caste system and you will just need to accept your rank or caste.

People have summarized it pretty well in that one way of being boosted is to reach a rank in a stack you wouldn’t be able to reach by yourself.

However, assuming that the matchmaker can still create 50% matchups given the MMR of the individuals in the group, I’d say it’s a myth that playing with people at a higher ELO is the only form of boosting. A person sitting at a lower SR can boost a friend at a higher SR in the exact same way as the only thing that matters in the end is that at least one person in the group has a true rank above that persons current rank. For example if you are sitting at 1000SR but really play like someone at 1500 and you group up with your 2000SR friend and play a bunch of games at 1500SR you will win more matches than you lose and you will hold your own at your 2000SR friend will be able to “carry”. The result will be that both of you climb even though your 2000SR friend in reality doesn’t deserve a higher rank. So the 1000SR player is effectively boosting the 2000SR player.

I know that this is probably being done all the time - someone deranks and then groups up with a higher SR friend to take them “along for the ride” but this post is more addressing the “grouping up with higher rank friends is automatic boosting” notion.

is there a reason why this is

As someone who plays 99% solo Q, I only consider it boosting if you either let someone else play on your account or group up with smurf(s). But I do think the sr range you’re allowed to group with is ridiculous. It should be 250, not 1000.

Boosted for me means when you play with people who are much better than you and not for the joy but solely for ratings. With something in exchange for your ratings(money etc)
Eg.:
Boost:
You’re silver
You play with GM team(5+you), people you don’t even know and like otherwise.
You give them money or a group BJ for their services.

Not boost:
You’re silver
Your boyfriend is Grand Master and you play together. No account share, payment involved.
BJ is okay coz he’s your boyfriend.

If you don’t even know the guy you’re playing with and pay to him for helping you it’s a boost.

If he is playing with you because you’re a nice guy it’s not a boost. Especially if you play with him for the same reason not for the boosted ratings.

Queuing with people in higher rank than you doesn’t automatically mean you are being boosted. A lot of times teammates call you being boosted due to their own frustrations of not being able to win a match.

If I see two people queuing together, one silver and one plat, I would more likely to think that the silver player (whose true rank might be gold) is smurfing to boost the plat player into higher ranks. These type of boosting is quite common in plat, and sometimes being very obvious.

Disagree.
I play with my girlfriend and I don’t boost her.
Silver + diamond/low master.

I think boosting is more of 2 or more high rated players with one low rated. 5 gm+1 silver is almost for sure a boost and not a friendship.

It’s tricky, sometimes it looks like a boost but it is not.

The SR disparity between the booster and the boosted does not matter in determining whether a group is trying to boost someone. In the case of 5gm boosting 1 silver, those 5 gm will probably use gold accounts anyways. (as you know, gm will never be allowed by the system to queue with silvers in comp)

It’s very obvious when you meet 5gm in silver.
Geez even 2-3 is Noticeably better than the entire opposite team. But yeah you’re right

How is this not a boost the only way for a silver to play with a GM is if the GM plays on a smurf account. And a GM could easily boost a silver to at least diamond. I’m only plat and I can carry games in silver.

Anyway, I don’t really buy the argument that if you can climb higher in a group than you can in solo Q means you’re necessarily boosted. I think anyone can climb higher with a good group that works well together. Comparing the two is like comparing team comp to DM comp. That’s why there should be a separate ladder only for solo Q.

I don’t carry my team. I play with my girlfriend.
I have two accounts indeed. But she is not boosted for sure… I’d need 3 more players like me for that.

This might cause longer queuing time, but it will definitely make competitive fairer! I just hope game developers do something to fix the issue.

I even would go so far and say, When you’re a mercy OT but you know which DPS in your team is going to pop off and smash them. And You are Giving 100% to keep him alive and pull that 4K off. You’re basicly a non Boosted Support player. But If you really just sit next to your GM widow holding right click and Tracer manages to easily kill you everytime he tries to, the nyou’re probablyboosted.

players use it a lot in cmbination with a One Trick mercy, as she basicly just needs to heal and boost allies. but If you put a Silver mercy to the LA Valients instead of Custa, you’ll instantly see, that mercy doesn’t belong there. Hope this gives some insight, from my perspective.
