What if we lock controversial items instead of removing them?

So I have been seeing a lot of threads asking to remove items such as the police skins. As they can be seen as offensive or used in an offensive way by some players.

Which is a fair argument, but some players also do not wish for content to be removed as they like the items.

Thus I’ve been thinking, what if we lock these items for a certain amount of time? They will not be used in game but they also not be gone either. The item can be unlocked whenever a controversy dies down.

Personally I do not think items should be locked or removed. However I would still like to know your thoughts on this idea.

Once again, what do the Korean or Swedish police have to do with militarised American police brutality unfairly targeted at people of colour?

In my opinion, nothing really. Except they are both police, which is pretty much it for me.

Then there’s no reason to lock or remove them. End of story.

The world is bigger than the USA. Overwatch is a good reminder of that.

If you use this sort of superficial similarity to remove things from the game, we will have nothing left.

Also understanding that the problem isn’t that there are police… but that the police are overstepping the poop out of their boundaries and abusing their power.

It’s not that there are police that is the problem, it is what the U.S.s police are DOING that’s the problem.

So why remove police skins?

I’m American and I can only imagine how frustrating it is for citizens of any other country to see silly changes to global things just to suit overly-sensitive Americans. It’s bad enough we’re having to play feelings police nonstop here. The least we can do is keep everyone else out of it.

Which why I do not think anything should be removed in the first place.

There are reasons to remove things though, like the Noose or other sprays and cosmetics that either don’t fit or have out of character problems. Saying NOTHING should be removed is silly. Things can happen and certain symbols or imagery can become problematic. A famous example of something that used to be innocuous but now is incredibly charged is the swastika. It’s actually still used in certain places for it’s original purpose as a religious symbol but worldwide is usually restricted because of it’s unfortunate use by a certain group.

Things get appropriated and charged with meaning not initially intended and then they need to be re-evaluated.

ACAB is an American thing.

Asian cops are not as bad as American ones.

… Hong Kong.

Look there are problems… it just isn’t about police as a thing.

Although nothing has been removed but the noose spray. Which I do not care for or miss.

That is the first spray to have been removed I believe… but other things have been removed from the game.

Such as with abilities? For me the noose is the only item that has been removed from the game.

At least to my knowledge.

Voice lines, map details (cosmetic) , victory pose. All of these have been altered in the course of the games life.

HK cops used have a rather positive reputation before China took over.

OK then… China.
Though there are cop problems in many places… it’s not because there are cops, it’s that the individual organizations are corrupted.

They should remove or don’t. Such a half measure wouldn’t please anybody.

Personally, I don’t think they need to be removed but also won’t be sad even a little if they go.

I don’t think anyone seriously wants that. No one is going to be offended by D.Va’s Police skin. Those are usually trolls being ‘ironic’ or whatever.
