Sym’s TP is an ally-only ability vs. Strange’s portals which anyone can use. I can see why people would think having an open portal would be fun but I think it would just make more headaches like “Sym opened a portal and the enemy D.Va threw her ult through it and blew up our entire team” situations that would make people dislike Symmetra more than they already do.

Also Doctor Strange is a tank, so he can handle that sort of mishap potential by keeping enemies at bay. Symmetra couldn’t stop people running through her portal if her tank wasn’t on top of it.

And yet, all these potential “headaches” are not a problem in MR…
People constantly making excuses for lack of innovation and risk taking is exactly the reason why Blizzard are not doing it - yet we demand it at the same time? The same people that say Junkenstein’s lab wouldn’t work because of “balance” or this would be too busted because this could happen…
OW2 is stagnating and to break this stagnation requires change, which is always a risk.
Please let’s encourage the introduction of more unique mechanics and hero interactions instead of shaking in our boots about +/- 1 second on ability cooldowns.
Because Strange is a tank that can handle those headaches

You’d run through a Sym portal knowing there’s probably a turret nest on the other side?
When there are many tanks that can deal with that? Yeah
Also if Symm is using her turrets on the other side of the portal, what is she doing with the portal?
Can Strange close his portal? Imagine if Sym opens a portal and has Hog hook some poor bastard on the other side, then she closes the portal. It’d be funny.

Surely there has to be a better way to balance it than that.

Because it’s a stupidly strong ability. Being able to portal your whole team from anywhere to anywhere would be extremely degenerate if it wasn’t on an ultimate tier cooldown.
And beyond moving your team, you can also just do stuff like putting a portal over an objective and having Punisher rain bullets down from above or using a portal just before Scarlet Witch ults and surprise kill the whole enemy team with it. It’s an extremely powerful ability when used right.

Strange’s portals are currently able to lock an entire team in their spawn room for 20 seconds with no counterplay. The reason it isn’t emergency fix worthy is because Rivals general pacing of a game is SIGNIFICANTLY faster than OW’s (dive characters are still targettable by their team’s healers in OW, not the case for rivals, which currently doesn’t have an autoaim/aura healer. they ALL require aiming at the ally AND LOS to the ally. the latter being why healers struggle to keep the dive characters healed.) Ultimates either get guaranteed kills, or a guaranteed counter ult. basic abilities do larger numbers in every category (damage, damage negated, healing), which OW doesn’t have in order to make it NOT emergency update worthy… you really want sym to be able to do that in OW???
Usually the solution to the ‘hero has 2 Ultimates’ problem is to nerf the problematic ability when it comes at the cost of gameplay (and yes, a 3 minute cooldown is detrimental to gameplay).
Oh well, I’m sure they’ll sort it out eventually.
People complain about Mei walls, imagine what can of worms you open up with that. Giving their team the ability to get to yours easier.

Well yeah, it is balanced by virtue of it being on an ultimate cooldown, though also Dr Strange having two ultimates essentially does keep him in the S tier over there Hulk or no Hulk
You talk as if Symmetra didn’t once have that ability before.
Your TP doesn’t work for the enemy, the Strange one does if used wrong.
Hog is the one who pulls them in, and he’s not even blamed for that.
Yesterday i saw how jeff transported his whole team to the point … maybe Reinhardt can charge wirh few heroes on his shoulders
