With the devs having played with the idea of turning some tanks into dps and after trying out a 1-3-2 set-up, what if some dps were made into tanks?
Currently a lot of tanky self-sustaining dps are generally seen as either oppressive or unfun to play against (Mei, Reaper, Doomfist, Torbjorn, even Bastion) and in addition to certain tank compositions (double shield) they are often even less fun to play against.
Some of those dps can undoubtfully be turned into tanks. Freeing up the dps queue, giving tank players more options and possibly even more counterplay to other characters one might find unfun.
What I particularly like is a concept someone once made to turn Bastion into a tank (which would mean people would only have one barrier between them and Bastion, instead of two): https://www.reddit.com/r/Competitiveoverwatch/comments/cwryln/bastion_the_fixable_hero/
Do you think any other dps could be turned into tanks? I think Doomfist could be a decent Hammond-like tank and Mei too functions similarly to a tank.
Perhaps a problem is that some characters don’t look like tanks and thus will likely not be turned into one if a redesign would take up too many resources. For example Torbjörn: He is basically a tiny tank, but because he is so much smaller, most people wouldn’t think of him as a “tank”, especially when all other tanks are 3 times his size (even baby Dva is taller than him).
Regardless of visual rework, I would love to see an attempt of this in the experimental card.

I would personally love it if Bastion/Doom/Mei were turned into tanks and Sombra/Sym were made into supports. Would even help queue times a ton.

Overall it’s a decent idea, but who cares if it’s experimental?
It’ll just be like 1-3-2 – they have zero intentions of actually making it the main game mode, they are just appeasing the masses by saying they did something.
As a Symmetra player this is both appealing and unappealing. Healing turrets is a popular idea, but has many flaws. It would also involve another rework of her, to give her healing capabilities that rival that of the others, which sounds scary.
But I guess when experimenting with turning Doomist into a tank, experimenting with Sym or Sombra as healers once probably wouldn’t be the worst thing.
I want to see if Blizzard can make it work. It is also a perfect time to rework a character’s negative design aspects if changing a character’s class is accepted by the community.
People dislike Mei’s piercing freeze, right? What if tank Mei still pierced, but would only slow people down instead of freezing them completely? What if she could place more walls, but they were smaller/had less pillars and a single dps were able to destroy them more quickly than now? This is also where her self-heal ice block would be destructable (which honestly should be in the game right now).
Experimental is the time to test out some crazy ideas and the perfect opportunity to change things completely. I think it’s worth it.
I’m pretty attached to Mei in her current form. I don’t want to see her reworked.
I would like to see Mei in the tank roster at least as an experimental mode. She doesn’t need any major changes to be placed there aside from shortening her wall cd and increasing her health pool.
Her icicle would definitely need to go or be tuned down. Can’t have a tank with spammable projectile with zero fall off damage.
It’s also very difficult to rework DPS into tanks because character models. Tanks have oversized models to go with their large health pools. A tank Mei, for instance… how do you handle that?
Mei is not that far off from Zarya.
Just needs to be more THICC

Yeah and taller… it would look terrible. Mei is not designed to be 6 foot tall and 250 lb.
I think for an “Experimental” we don’t have to overthink the models, haha. It is definitely a point of concern if the experiment was to be turned into reality, but that’s an issue for another time.
I’ve always liked the idea of different versions of characters just in general. Sounds fun. I would love more customization in the game which is why I’m looking forward to the skill stuff in OW2. Aside that, I’d imagine then the game like that would be a balance between tanky characters and glass canons.
- For Symmetra support a health regeneration generator, enabling movement through other means and/or slowing or hindering enemies movement.
- For Doomfist, things like rock throwing, large punch waves but more grounded brawler, less focus on the mobility and more on the fist, but I guess this would make him more like Roadhog.
- Mei is obvious to just tweaking.
- Reaper, no idea. I think he’d play like a Hammond Sombra hybrid with mobility, sneaking around, and assassinating targets.
- Bastion is a tough one. No idea other than making him into some sort of artillery tank.
- Torbjorn, I can imagine defensive turrets built up. I’ve always imagined him or a new tank having a turret shield.
So what you are saying is a tank can’t exist of smaller height like Mei or Torb?
Seems pretty limiting, I think they could come up with trade offs if they really wanted to.

She doesn’t need a size change to be a tank, especially if she has a smaller health pool. All the tanks are different sizes and shapes.
