Suppose Jeff shows up on Friday and says OW2 is not happening anymore? I mean, there’s been no pre-orders, so no harm, no foul, right? BUT, that doesn’t mean all the PvP content goes away. Say Monday or Tuesday there’s a huge PTR patch with three new heroes, five new maps, new HUD and some weather effects. Then whatever else was to be launched with OW2 gets added to the game later. And the new remodels become some special skins that possibly are there to buy individually or in one big bundle all at once. So really, just the story mode wouldn’t come to be. What would you do if that were to happen?
I would be disappointed as I wait for the ensuing riot.
Overwatch would get massive hate as OW2 is the thing keeping the game/fan base alive at this point in time with a lack of events, content and Blizzcon

If they scrapped “sequal” they would scrap it all together. New stuff might not be compatibile with our version of the game. But I dont think that would be the case.
Remeber they updated engine to handle all that stuff they build. It rakes ton of money and development time. So if they canceled it they would have shareholders to anwser to why they wasted their money.
What if Activision shut down every single blizzard IP as well. What if blizzcon was a goodbye “party” for everything and we’re only getting FPS yearly skins of the IP’s as COD releases?
… People would be mad. End.

To be honest, I don’t think this will happen. It would the death for the Overwatch IP. They also still looking for a lot of Developers for OW2.
I think they had a lot of internal issues after the Blizzcon 2019. They saw that many online magazines calling OW2 an “expensaion pack” instead of a sequel. Maybe they changed their plan how they handle the upgrade from OW1 --> OW2 and other stuff. Covid is one reason too why the development went slow in 2020. I really hope they will be more transparent after the Blizzcon and what they are doing in 2021 with OW2.

Celebrate at this point. It would be sad for the new engine but all in all I could live with it. In my current situation the only game I really like playing is OW. Sure it has problems (stupid MM, 2CP, slow content) but the characters are so well designt that I want to play them.
It will be probably the best thing that could happen becuse that means they can use all the leftover content to be added in the current version.
Blizzard gave this update about OW2 at their last investor update (the same one where they said they don’t expect to release OW2 in 2021):

Anthem still isnt cancelled , and that one died like 2 weeks after release , why would ow2 be cancelled.
if it were to happen, i would move on with my life, its just a game , personally im fine if theres no ow2
i wouldnt really mind if we get continuous updates. heroes, maps, skins, animated shorts, etc. would be disappointed about the pve part since it would be cool to have a single player campaign mode.
this actually happened to starcraft where they made a single player game tied in with starcraft lore that got cancelled… i forgot the name of the game starcraft: ghost i think it was called
playing as that nova chick seemed pretty cool especially since 3rd person hehe

OW2 is safe, it’s not a StartCraft shooter…

at least i got the nova widowmaker skin. still can go into 3rd person replays for that 
I mean, if they still release all the content, then it wouldn’t really be like OW2 was cancelled. It would just be blizz realizing they shouldn’t be abandoning their game just so they can try to sell an expansion for sequel money.
