I really like playing Genji but the forums keep constantly trashing him as being really low skill and forgiving. Most people like to also associate Genji mains with pretty terrible people. Can I main McCree and not get hated on? One of the reasons I quit this game for a while was because people kept hating on the heroes I liked to play.

If you like Genji play him.
You shouldn’t care about what other people says.
He takes skill to use and this is coming from a Mercy main.

I agree with you 100%. It’s just the negative stigma people put on this forum towards certain hero players. On the old forum I made a lot of posts and people said things like “oh, it’s a Genji main”.
Who cares what the people like?
No one dictates who you should play on your account. Only you decide not us.
I have been trashed for being a Mercy main and I don’t care, I still play her.
Just play whoever you enjoy. People will complain no matter what. I’d say more people get flack when they are getting countered hard and refuse to switch.
Before I stopped playing a couple months ago, I actually had quite a few off meta picks on my team (as in like Hanzo), and almost all were given a fair shot with no complaints at the start. This was in comp.

The greatest piece of advice I can give to you is to not give two craps what anyone on these forums think. Myself included. Do you, always. If you want to play Genji, play Genji.

Tbh, Genji takes a ton of skill and almost all of the hate on Genji players is completely immature and unnecessary.
I used to main Genji in comp but I quit playing him because of the amount of abuse I would get for every single loss. The game isn’t fun to play when you have to constantly be worried about messing up or some idiot is going to say, “gtfo Genji u suk lul stoopid instalok gengu main”.
In my experience, it’s against DPS heroes in general, not just Genji. I have never gotten individually called out for a loss as a support, yet it happens every other time as a DPS. If you can handle the constant negativity, go for it. If not, you should either play tank or support, or just stick to QP and arcade.
Don’t main anyone. Have a diverse hero cast.
Really? I had someone say there were no heals being provided (he was playing Zarya), and I had over 20k healing. Not sure what more they wanted from me or my fellow support.
I’ve seen tanks get harped on too. Not pushing in, being pansies, etc.
I’m not saying that tanks and supports getting blamed is unheard of, because it definitely does happen. I’m saying that it doesn’t happen half as much as DPS players getting blamed.
I could be wrong, but I think supports getting blamed is a low ELO thing that stems from low ELO DPS mains with bad awareness who push in without a team, get 1 shot, and then feel like their tanks and healers are trash and not supporting them.
In highly coordinated games, the natural thought process is almost always, “we lost the fight. None of the enemy team is dying. Therefore, our DPS players are trash.”
Most players hop on that lazy train of thinking instead of actually trying to figure out what the problem is. The DPS could be bad, the communication could be bad, the tanks could not be creating enough space, the team may not be focusing the correct targets, the team comp could be bad, etc. etc. It could literally be anything in every single game and yet most players just hop on the “dps is obviously trash” bandwagon when that isn’t always the case.

I play genji because he’s fun, and what’s the point of playing a video game if you don’t have fun? Unfortnuately I also have to flex a lot because I also like to win sometimes.
If Genji was really such a low skill hero, I wouldn’t be statistically atrocious at Genji… People are just tilted that they suck at countering him or play classes he does well against.

You said you’ve never been called out as a support for a loss. As someone who never plays DPS in comp, I can say that I’ve seen it happen for tanks and healers.
And yeah, I mean, if I’m keeping everyone alive and nothing is dying, I sure as heck know it’s not my fault that we can’t take the point. And in other games, such as WoW, it really is the job of the DPS to finish things off. I used to raid as DPS, so if we hit enrage timers, yeah, I was partially to blame.
Also, the DPS roster has a bit more depth, so they have more options to choose from to be more effective. I’m not saying it is always the fault of the DPS. I have gotten frustrated with every role on the team. But killing stuff is important. Objective is the main goal, but you can’t push the payload or take a point with enemies around.
