What happened to this game's matchmaking?

My gf and I have been playing this game since OW1 beta. I have never seen matchmaking in quick play be this terrible. Some days I can’t stop winning and other days I can’t stop losing. It’s either a 8-1 win streak or an 8-1 loss streak. The push maps are especially steamroll-prone. What gives? The devs seem to imply that matches are mostly balanced, but this has not been my experience at all.

After the honeymoon phase ended, players fled from the game. The match making is bad because there is no match making anymore, to keep the queue times down the net has been widened so much it might as well not exist anymore.

Nothing, its the same OW1 Matchmaker with lss information shown…

So why only 6 years later NOW people see problems with it?

Do you have any sources to back that claim? Because just recently there were complaints about low ranked players in GM games, and the devs did something to tighten the net for comp. It’s obviously different.

Almost all of the variation in my games I feel I can attribute to bad team compositions and me not playing my better characters for a given map. I generally go a noticeable loss streak when I try to 1trick Kiriko compared to swapping around supports.

That is generally how it works in most games. If you notice the winning team usually doesn’t swap while the losing team will often swap at the very end or after a couple of snowballed fights.

That’s generally when leavers happen. The match turns around. The ‘wining team’ is stubborn too to swap until they start losing.

Sources?

Blizzard has been very clear about not resetting the MMR system

and it wasnt reworked, just tweaked. Its the same system as before just people are echoing sentiments from others… Like content creators…

It was always the case since the release of OW1

They don’t, because it’s not true.

It’s not the same matchmaker because that would be pointless in the first place, since the game has changed drastically since OW1 in terms of ranking system etc.

There’s lots of youtube videos about it if you want to do some digging yourself, though.

Incorrect.

It’s not the same matchmaker. They might use some of the same coding, but it’s definitely not the same one. The new one is on a whole new level of horrible design.

Explain where did they tell us we got a new matchmaker?

Your games are still based on the average MMR of the group, its still creating as close to that 50/50 chance as possible

The MMR wasnt reset, so the data from OW1 was carried into OW2. Dispite players telling Blizzards its a new game with a new format, dont use old data!

And here some CC are out here saying “they cant reset the MMR games will be total chaos!”

And would you look at that…It wasnt reset and its chaos anyway…

So my question is, why is this matchmaker a problem now, when its overall still doing the same job?

They’ve reworked most of it’s internal coding in order to make it work with the new ranking system and other major tweaks. It is literally not the same matchmaker they used for OW1.

But it’s not doing the same job. It’s giving us worse matchups than the previous version of it did in OW1.

The reason it’s chaotic is because they messed it up when assigning the division range to the matchmaker (among other things they messed up). They didn’t narrow it nearly enough.

Again.

They’ve reworked most of it’s internal coding in order to make it work with the new ranking system and other major tweaks. It is literally not the same matchmaker they used for OW1.

I’m not even sure you’re following the debate either. I’ve not said the matchmaker doesn’t suck. It’s probably the worst matchmaker in any fps title i’ve played in years, but it’s still not the same version they used in OW1. It’s much much worse.

Theyve never stated that they reworked any code. Where did you get that from? Can you pull it up?

They have shown over the years they are willing to tweak some values, but scrap it and remake it? Hell no.

It is doing the same job because you still get a MMR and they still take that MMR of 10 players and split it into 2 teams to try to get it as close to the 50/50 as possible.

It was shyte of day 1 of OW and its shyte now

In short, you’ve not been paying attention to anything since OW1. Good to know. Moving along…

I asked you to pull it up proof, not deflect and avoid answering the question.

Where is the proof?

The major improvement we’ve been tuning for is to make matches with a narrower spread of MMRs. And we’ve made progress, reducing the spread of a typical match by around 10% in Comp!

This may sound like a modest improvement–reducing MMR spread in matches is a really tricky problem. The main way we improve it is to be smarter and smarter about how we matchmake groups.

We’ve continued to make incremental adjustments since last week, but it’s probably about as good as it can get for this patch. But you can expect us to keep trying to improve match spread in future patches!

Does it sounds like a completely different matchmaker? Or 1 they simply tweaked? Because the word “tuned” doesnt mean “replaced” just “adjusted”

And if so why does tightening up the MMR make your game experience worse?

Quoted for emphasis.

Not to mention that Role-Queue really doesn’t allow for more skilled flex players to switch roles as needed.

The matchmaking was always like this it just never was as apparent since the game was actually fun once upon a time. Everything bad and good got put under a magnifying glass with the removal of two players per match

They didn’t know how to sabotage this gamefun anymore so they worsened the matchmaking.

No, no way, the two devs laughed on video at the comment that players could blame THEIR matchmaking for bad games.
So it must be working just fine, just ask them.

The OW2 experience in a nutshell.

It is my experience as well, in ow2 it has gone downhill every season / patches for whatever reason. Competitive feels much better than qp to me.

I think especially solo queue is absolutely cursed in qp for the last 2 months or so.

I wouldnt be surprised if the fixes they did to stacks have faster queues in QP made it just that much worse for solo people.

One of the matchmaker “devs” is quite active on twitter though, suggest following them if you’re interested in some of their ongoing thoughts ( srslypaladin )

The game has no real player base now, their horrible balance decisions and band aid fixes like RQ and 5v5 haven’t helped the experience either. Demanding $20 per skin while simultaneously ignoring all balance issues will cause people to go play anything but this game.
