Hi, sorry if this is a really dumb question, but I’ve recently returned to Overwatch after having quit towards the early days of OW2. It’s been super fun getting back into it, especially because I really loved the game when i was younger. However, something’s been bugging me now that I’ve refamiliarized myself with the fandom.
Does Overwatch not do cinematics anymore?? I feel like the last one I saw was JQ’s way back in 2022. Also, the story seems a bit…flat now if you get what I mean.
Is it because of the devs? Do they just not wanna focus on that stuff as much anymore? I just feel like the story was so integral to the fanfare surrounding OW1.
If anyone would be so kind as to fill me in on what’s happened with the lore since I quit, it would be much appreciated

IIRC the story team had been disbanded to save costs back when Activision acquired Blizzard. Mostly just a greed play, not having a long term vision for what made overwatch great. Which was the story.
It seems there is at least an attempt to contribute to the story more recently but I agree that it falls flat in a few ways. Mostly that it feels forced in a way. The pace is not good in the latter ones. The kiriko cinematic especially comes to mind, it tries too hard to be emotional and loses it entirely by attempting to force an emotional connection to characters you see for 10 seconds. I’ve previously posted on the subject.
With that said, the recent Ramatra comic, especially the version narrated by the VA (yt) is quite refreshing. A more serious tone was very welcome.
Overall the tone shift from a world at literal war to a happy-go-lucky place where shooting things is fun has hurt the lore a good bit. Even the in game voice lines show it. I play lucio and he’s always been upbeat but man he changed a lot personality wise in OW2. The characters are mostly disconnected from the reality of their environments now.
I’m hoping the more recent works and the addition and expansion of the story space in game gets the ball rolling again.
