What Happened to the NERF Guns? :( (solved)

So I walked into my local Gamestop today and they had the Overwatch Nerf guns from that series we were told was coming out, so I’ve just been on the look out for them as I browse regularly and there they were today!

I was looking for Reaper’s guns to go with my cosplay and I actually held out on getting the foam ones as I was hoping to get ones that actually worked if I was gonna spend the same kinda money on foam ones anyway might as well got working ones.

They had the 2 guns (and also the single gun, but only one.) and a replica of his mask with ammo for about $80 bucks (Canadian) which to me, is a steal given the fact my Halloween shop wanted me to pay $40 each for the officially licence foam guns.

There was just one problem… THEY WERE WIGHT! (White). I figured alright cool, collectors edition guns. McCree’s gun was also Wight, and D.va’s was normal pink. I asked the store, they said all they got in was these white ones.

Now I’m upset, because I haven’t seen the black ones, and I do a google search and all that comes back is the Wight ones!!! I was saving it for my cosplay but I need his original black shotguns, because I’m cosplaying base skin, default reaper!!

When I google all I’m seeing are the Wight shotguns… Why? Did they change them last minute? Are we NOT getting black ones?

The only argument I can see for this is “so ppl don’t rob banks” but THAT’S WHAT THE ORANGE TIPS ARE FOR. IF people remove those tips, that’s on the people not the product.

Does anyone have any sources or news about the original versions of the guns? Are they not out yet? Or is these white ones all we’re getting? I suppose I could repaint the white ones, really easy since its white, but its just a bit more of a hassle than it has to be. If all we are getting are the white versions of the guns, I have to ask WHY blizzard made this decision…

Edit: picture of the bundle if anyone is curious

(@blizzard can I have level 3 good boy on the forms so I can share images directly please???)

Edit 2: Simple answer, gun stigma in the US, which I understand. Will just repaint the white shotguns for my cosplay.

I don’t think black ones exist. I’ve never seen it out can’t find it anywhere.

You could spray paint them. Nerf blasters are usually mod friendly.

Yeah i was avoiding having to do that… I don’t know why there’s not like original versions of their guns?? Why “white” ones? Theres black nerf guns, (Deadpool one i saw is mostly black and red, obviously)

Like D.va’s is normal, its pink but McCree’s is white, and Reaper’s is white.

I used to lose all the damn bullets as a kid

I’m 100% sure it’s because the Reaper gun is all black and they can’t sell all black blasters- otherwise it’d look like a real gun from a distance.
They could add orange accents to it but that wouldn’t be “lore friendly”.
Wight would be more “lore friendly” if you get what I mean.

Similarly with McCree’s being white and not metallic.

This makes no sense, as if you’d notice, the white ones have orange tips and accents anyway. This is required by law for replica/toy guns.

There’s no reason why they can’t sell an entirely black one, I know NERF’s thing is well, that NERF look, colorful, but you CAN sell replica toy guns that are fully black or metal or green or something, see them all the time as generic toy guns for kids.

This is why I don’t understand why it’s white…

$80 is still a steal tho so I’m thinking if its true there is no original version and only these white versions, I’m going back to the store tomorrow…

Well if you want a real answer best thing to do is contact Hasbro directly. I don’t think Blizzard had much to do with this.

There is not a black version of the guns. Same for McCree, D.Va’s gun is the only one that’s the same as in-game probably because it’s pink.

You sure about that? With all the massive shootings there has been a change in the color schemes of toy guns. Realistic colors are becoming more and more rare and companies like apple even replaced the gun emoji with a toy one

You also have to remember I live in Canada (mentioned above by my currency) where we’re not constantly afraid to go to school because that doesn’t happen here as often as it does in the states, so yes I’m sure. You see black/darker colored toy guns all the time.

Common for kids to pull the orange plastic off it to make it more real, those are the kids that get in trouble with the law bc doing that is illegal.

Now that you mention that though, that could explain why they are white as they are mainly going to be marketed to the us with limited supply to other places, so I can understand a bit more now… Just wish there was an option since they are not really “toys” so much as encouraged to be collectors items… though yes they are toys and can be played with as toys.

Little annoyed the gun issue in the state is so bad you can’t have fake guns from fun games in the form of nerf guns that shoot soft balls… that just really puts into perspective how much of a problem that really is huh?

Well Blizzard passed off on them for production, they have to be aware they are white and approved it.

The phenomenon is affecting all of the west. Give it time and eventually realistic toy guns will be fully phased out. It is something that is needed in today’s time

I mean its only needed because of the people. I will simply say I disagree and this is a US mostly centered problem (I’m not going to deny mass shootings don’t happen in Canada but it’s statistically lower.) and you will continue to see realistic toy guns in other countries that are not the US.

I dont want to start getting into gun politics on an overwatch form though so I’m not gonna say anymore than that. I don’t even care for guns I only care about these guns because they are based on a video game and not even a realistic video game. (I don’t even know if reapers gun are viable in a realistic situation.)

Anyway my main point with asking about the white guns is I don’t want to drop $80 now and have black ones come out later, so if they wont be produced, I’ll go get the white ones and mod them myself, no biggie.

It doesn’t matter if there is an orange tip or not, people paint or remove it. The solid black color is widely associated with military and police weapons (compare to things like the Remington Wingmaster I own which is blued steel and wood, still a 12 gauge but it ‘looks’ like a hunting gun and doesn’t scare people the way a short barreled all-black shotgun would).

You could argue (and you’d be right) that people can just paint a white toy gun black to make it look real. I think the bigger point is Blizzard doesn’t want to be the ones who get blamed for selling an all-black nerf gun that could be mistaken for a real firearm by the police or security guards etc. If someone paints one black and commits a crime with it, Blizzard can argue they intentionally sold white or pink nerf guns to prevent this.

It makes no sense any way it’s sliced though, because REAL guns are already sold with factory cerakote colors, you can order an all pink Glock that looks like a toy from a weird crossover kit where Barbie joined up with the GI JOES to fight Cobra, but it’s still slinging .40 bullets. You can reskin a gun IRL just like you can in a video game, they even have what’s hydro-dipping where it can imprint images onto just about any object, so if you wanted to you could take a real firearm and dress it up in neon yellow and neon green and make it look like a toy.

The point is a gun-like object that is solid black shouldn’t mean anything to anyone, not when a real gun can be disguised with bright colors and assumed to be a toy. The point is, if it’s remotely gun shaped, don’t be an absolute idiot with it in public.

This is, or should be, illegal.

I came to this realization as well when someone pointed out to me above that unlike here, y’all dont have black or dark toy guns at all anymore really because its so common and so much of an issue so I can 100% understand that and agree that’s a smart move that kinda needs to be done because lets face it, some cop is going to shoot some kid whos playing with these guns. If its painted black, no blame can be placed on Blizzard. 100% understandable, and honestly for what its worth to me, I can just paint them black for my cosplay no big deal. (and obviously keep the orange tips because it is the law.)

You make a good point with that, funny how there’s laws or at least soft laws being in place now that you cant sell realistic looking toys, but can make something real look like a toy… Honestly should be a law that you can’t paint real stuff to look like that, but I can’t say much bc ppl paint their real guns like that here too.

Exactly! I want it for cosplay and at cons, and cons here have to examine your weapons and give you a ticket/stamp or something to say its okay for you to carry it and you’re not allowed to point them at anyone without letting them know! IF you go around with a fake gun pointing it at random joes on the street someone’s going to report you!!
