Ranks have been reset twice since then, you want them to invent a time machine?
In any case, Season 2/3 was around the time that people who had just started playing Overwatch 2 on-release started playing Competitive and we know that most of them ended up being Bronze-level players. This inflated the ranks of basically everyone else due to the sheer number of new players (remember, rank is a relative measure of skill, not an objective one) and the curve had to be manually-adjusted accordingly.
They based your rank off your MMR that season.
I had an account that finished S2 as Diamond 1
Started S3 as GM5
Skipped Masters altogether
