Did they ever talk about why she’s not if so?
Mei makes more sense than Doomfist in the tank role imo

She was a tank in the April Fools patch they released ages ago, but that’s it.

It’s something that people in the community have suggested many times, but the devs never said they were even experimenting with it for OW2. There was any experimental card for either April Fools or one of the content creator tournament patches where Mei was moved to the tank role, but that was never meant to be a change that would make it into the main game.
It was a joke experimental patch.
In the same patch Sigma could fly and Doomfist could rocket punch upwards.

Now that the tank role is so popular we don’t need to move any more heroes, Mei is fine where she is.

Mei’s a tank there.
If I recall correctly, devs mentioned but never actualized it. They figured Mei fit the DPS role in the end.
Personally, I really like Mei right where she is, because she’s the only thing now that feels like an off tank. And due to how much responsibility the one tank holds to set the match pacing, and sharing that load to sacrifice a bit of damage potential is actually a really nice option. Not every hero needs to play the same just because they are in the same role. Mei should stay this interesting middle ground between tank and dps.
