What does targeting mean?

Someone on the other team said I was targeting when I was playing Bastion. What the heck does that even mean? Is this some new lingo I have never heard before?

Targetting someone usually means you’re specifically “targetting” them, an example would be a junkrat using his tire only to kill the enemy mercy. That mercy is the target of the Junkrat’s ult.

This can be true for a billion different examples, like Sombra or Tracer spawn camping a zen, or Bastion melting and chasing the tank, or Ana only sleeping the winston.

The act of targetting isn’t exclusive to kills, it’s when someone becomes the focus of whatever they’re being dealt, damage, kills, abilities etc.

In the usual crap talk that goes on it usually translates into someone being upset that they are being effectively countered.

There are times though when some players (usually on my team) will fixate and focus on certain players when it doesn’t make sense because they do it based off emotion and not strategy or logic.

I was ulting sniper positions and kept charge their tank as bastion, no matter what he was doing. As well as any other player I decided to single out that was being annoying. I do not play Bastion strategically at all I guess, I just keep shooting and only hide when I have to.

It means that you are prioritizing them over anyone else.

Isn’t that what you are supposed to do single out one player to break their morale?

Yes. You can take it as a compliment. it means that you have made them mad.

I’d say the main difference to me, is:

Prioritizing is when you effectively eliminate a target that’s putting out the most value during a fight.

Targeting is when you eliminate them, and only them, no matter what, without regard to if they’re being effective or not.

Prioritizing is emotion for the team.

Targeting is emotion for yourself and detriment to them.
