I see this term used often and wide, but it seems to be used to describe something that people think is OP.
Personally I’d consider it to be where significantly nerfing or taking away individual abilities from a character wouldn’t fundamentally change what they can do. Kinda like Hanzo’s leap, not having it wouldn’t make him unplayable. Same with Brigitte’s self heal or Genji’s deflect hitbox size.
I saw this term used in reference to Tracer earlier, whereas I can’t think of a more bare-bones character. You take away any aspect of her kit and she’s basically unplayable.
As it happens, I don’t have a problem necessarily with certain aspects of characters being overtuned, as overtuned doesn’t necessarily equal BEING overpowered. You could even make a compelling argument that there are overtuned characters in the game that are underpowered/underequipped to deal with the game as it stands (Bastion stands out here as a prime example).
So I was wondering what this term really means to other players, as it seems to be a bit of a fuzzy descriptor, simply used to justify the position of the player wanting nerfs to potentially be given to certain characters.
It doesn’t mean anything to me. I just find it confusing.

Overtuned means the character/hero has a lot of tools available or options, more than the rest of the characters, but those options are not so overwhelming that can cover all the weaknesses, or at least take a lot of skill to use to its max impact.
Example of an overtuned hero : Genji.

From my experience heroes that aren’t popular are “OP” but heroes that are popular are “Just a tiny bit overtuned.”

Lol, so the difference between a onetrick and a main.
With the onetrick being the off-meta hero, and the main being the meta hero.

I think over tuned is similar to over performing (not over powered) where they start to venture into other heroes niches/roles/areas they excel at and do it about the same as the other hero but also still have their own area they still work in making the other hero a slightly worse pick due to the lack of a 2nd area to excel in.
over tuned in where their area is good but one part of it (like junks damage is fine but he finally got the needed ult gain nerf) is just slightly too good but not so god they become a must pick
Overtuned was Hanzo after his rework
Overpowered was Mercy after her rework (before any nerfs)
that’s how I see it at least

I guess it depends on who you’re playing vs another. An Ana or Zen player months ago would say Doomfist was overtuned because they had little ways of fighting back. Unless you pull a sleep dart you were basically dead meat. But a Sombra player wouldn’t have any problems with him.
Interesting, I’d definitely consider Doom to be one of those broken characters, but not in an Overpowered or Overtuned way. More because he breaks the fundamental mechanics of the game itself. I guess that’s why he’s either totally useless or totally unbearable to deal with and dominates. It’s not like you could realistically get rid of any of his core kit though (maybe his non-healable shields?)
Overtuned to me means having the best parts of other hero’s kits who only have 1 or 2 advantages but your hero has all of them. Battiste: really strong vertical mobility, really strong aoe healing both long range and close range, really good gun for a support and damage output, REALLY good immortality field that could be argued outclasses some current healers’ ults. and really good ult.
There is no downside to battiste’s kit, he has the best of all worlds
Eh. Overtuned is when you have slightly too much in the numbers department.
Overloaded means they have too much stuff.
Undertuned is when their numbers are too low.
Overpowered is when they are too strong.
None of these are mutually exclusive or inclusive either.

You just look at genji and tracer…
Care to elaborate? This is exactly what the post is about.

Honestly I wish more heroes were “over-tuned” to counteract the garbage rock-paper-scissors way that this game currently works.
Over-tuned in this game basically means able to fight anybody.

high value - low risk heroes basically
Overtuned: May too much value with an overbloated kit.
Ex: Brigitte, D.VA (When she got her micro missiles.)
I personally read it as in that awkward gray area between balanced and OP.
They aren’t actually OP, but they are fairly strong and could maybe use some added counter play, or maybe small, nigh insignificant tweaking.
That has nothing to do with the thread though. What would make them over-tuned specifically. Genji I would say probably does fit that description, Tracer however I feel doesn’t.
why not? they both have more than 1 out of the jail cards while all other heroes have 1
A good example is Tracer pre-Brig.
She could outplay everything, while most heroes have obvious weaknesses, eventually making her a must pick at high level play.
