What does it even mean when someone says "diff"?

When I first saw it, I thought it was a complement to a teammate saying that that person was most responsible for the win.

But now I’m wondering whether it means something else:

  • It means that the matchmaker put the player in the game at a different MMR from everyone else, so the player is supposed to be the difference, but maybe wasn’t?
  • It means that the player was the difference, causing the team to lose?
  • It’s meaning that the enemy team would have lost except for that one player, so meant to insult the rest of the enemy team?

What is the actual accepted meaning of the term?

If you were to say “soldier diff” for example, you’re saying that one team’s soldier is superior to the other

What I’ve noticed is it’s always someone trying to pat their own shoulder when they say “diff”. We had a Bap on the enemy around a day ago, saying “Bap diff”, because their team won. Actually made me feel second-hand embarrassed. We never had a Baptiste on our team.

And his stats were terrible on top of it (their Moira was keeping the team up).
