What does hard countered or soft countered mean?

We all have our ideas about this, but I have never seen anyone specify how they interpreted these concepts.

Hard counter:
Heroes with hitscan against Pharah.

Soft counter:
Heroes with projectiles against Pharah.

To put it simple. The most reliable way to deal with a character.

Hard counter, in terms of skills in heroes:
Roadhog uses Whole Hog, can easily be counter with McCree’s Flashbang or any CC skills, that’s a hard-counter in terms of character skills.

Character-Wise, character vs character. There’s plenty of variables. No idea.

Hard counter = when u pick a hero that can reliably shut down another hero, rendering him/her nearly useless

For e.g. Picking a widow to a brigitte, she literally cant do jacksh** to a sniper

Soft counter = when u pick a hero that can somewhat deal with another hero , not to the point where u shut him/her down but at least enough to scare him/her away.

For e.g. Picking a mccree to a genji, not exactly the most reliable, but can still get the job done

Hard counter is when there is absolutely nothing you can do about a certain hero, no matter how good you are. Like Symmetra into Pharah. Unless the Pharah drops down because she feels like it, Symmetra just kinda has to live with the fact she is there.

Soft countering is when one person has an edge on the other in a general fight, but can still get shut down if the other person is good enough and plays their cards right.

At least, that’s how I chose to see it.

To me , a hard counter is when a hero can do almost nothing to their hard-counter unless the hard counter makes a MASSIVE mistake, they also make the hero they counter extremely hard to do your job with, examples :

Winston hard countering Sym

Pharah hard countering junkrat and brigitte.

Soft counters have an edge over the heroes they counter ,but the ones getting countered can still outplay their counters and win ,if not the hero getting countered can still do their job, for example : Winston soft-countering Genji

A hard counter is someone who counters a specific hero in question to an obscene degree. Usually making them play differently at their own disadvantage or switching. An example here is Widowmaker versus Ana.

A soft counter is someone who can counter a hero but not to the degree that a hard counter can. They may enable some sort of play around but generally the hero will stay the same. The example this time being Genji versus Hanzo.

You counter a hero when the odds in an engagement favor you.

Soft=better odds
Hard=massively better odds.

Good example is Pharah:
Basically heroes with limited Range like Reinhard, Moira, Symmetra and Birgitte can’t do anything against her. (are hard countered)

While hit scan heroes like Soldier, McCree and Widow are considered her counter. Or D.Va who can eat her missiles. (However all more of the soft variety.)

Not every hero has hard counters but soft counter are always available.

Hard counter is a match up that can’t be won no matter what you use. Bastion hard counters Winston because in a duel Winston loses at all ranges.

Soft counter is where you can stop a hero from doing their job but not necessarily enough to kill. Symmetra is a soft counter to Genji diving. But she has nothing else to counter his mobility so he can escape death in most situations.

Simply put hard counter nothing you can do because that hero dominates you. Soft you have options to get around.

lol. nah, Hitscan heroes are not hard counters to Pharah.

Soldier:76 and McCree are soft counters, Pharah can fight them pretty well.
a good widow is maybe a hard counter to Pharah.
Pharah hard counters projectile characters - e.g. Mei, Junkrat.

another hard counter could be Reaper vs Winston, (though Winston can still be viable because he can just avoid the reaper)
a soft counter can be McCree vs Tracer because McCree can delete Tracer IF he hits her with his stun and IF he lands his shot afterwards. (as a tracer, you can easily kill McCree by avoiding him until you hear the flashbang voiceline and then instantly dive him)

A soft counter is something that with a bit of effort or skill can counter something with equal effort or skill example S76 and Pharah they are both perfectly capable of killing each other and it generally comes down to who’s the better player.

Hard counters are something that is heavily favoured to win and requires considerable less effort than what it’s countering to succeed example Winston and Widow in order for Widow to win she has to headshot him multiple times while keeping a safe distance but Winston just had to get close and hold left click.

Tracer is a weird one pretty much everything soft counters her but nothing hard counters her making it purely down to the skill of the player who succeeds, on the other hand if you pick symmetra alot of heroes hard counter you in order for a Sym to kill a Pharah the Pharah has to do something rather silly.

hardcounter = swap your hero, because he is useless
softcounter = you can’t do what you want, but no reason to swap

old roadhog was a hardcounter to winston.

Hard Counter = You’re gonna have a bad day. Guaranteed Elimination.
Soft Counter = Might work… might not. Might get smacked. Might smack them.

A hard counter is a hero that nullifies the effectiveness of another consistently. For example, Winston is used to jump into the middle or behind and enemy formation and then deploy his shield to protect himself while he does his work and then leap out. Bastion is a back line defender, he may be stationary, but he’s right where Winston would jump into and pretty much deletes his shield and then him. Winston may be more effective switching to another hero. Bastion hard counters Winston.

A soft counter is a hero that’s capable of dealing with another hero but is incapable of following through or cannot deal with them consistently or practically. Sombra is capable of dealing with every hero in the game, but has to setup the fight specifically for each one and takes around ten times longer than a hard counter.

Hard counter is if hero A beats hero B very effortlessly, with hero B having little chance to outplay.
Soft counter is if hero A has a slight advantage over hero B, but hero B can still outplay when skilled enough.

Exampel hard counter: Pharah vs Symmetra
Example soft counter: Mei vs Genji
