The cinematics… So where are they??? Anyone who thinks this franchise can sustain itself on PvP only and says that the game doesn’t need PvE or lore is on pure copium. I’m sorry, but it has to be said.
The lore carries this game. When people want to reminisce about Overwatch, they don’t go back and watch GOATs meta or Beyblade or hackfist or any of those PvP moments. No. They go
I do not understand why each new hero does not get a trailer, at least. It does not need to be 3D Pixar rip-off nonsense. Most games have this for new releases…
Fr. Even the old school “Hero Origins” would be nice. They could even use some of the original characters who never got hero Origin stories to fill the gaps between new hero releases.
Unfortunately, the very clear answer is: Overwatch 2 does not get the funding that Overwatch 1 did during its golden era.
We used to get loads of comics, short stories and animated shorts most likely because Blizzard gave Overwatch a huge budget for marketing. Nowadays, because Overwatch has been on the decline and isn’t the absolute monster it was from 2016-2019 due to poor upper management from Blizzard (not the OW team, we love the OW team) so we get very little cinematic stuff.
I mean the last animated short (talking 3D, fully animated ones here) that we got was to help promote the collab with Le Sserafim, and I guarantee that the OW team had to fight to get the green light for that animated short, even though it’s for purely commercial purposes.
Bro what? They have 32 comics, 19 “short” stories, 5 2D animations, and 15 cinematics. That’s all without even mentioning the origin stories and the in-game interactions, which give a lot of insight on how the characters think and act about previous events in the lore.
The issue is the medium in which they present lore is not read by anyone because nobody wants to go to some 3rd party website just to read a comic book.
For reference, they released 6 cinematics in 2016, and 2 cinematics for every year since then, except for this year which has only had 1. They are capable of doing it, but they want to focus on making ads instead.
Counter-strike thrives off it’s esports. OW has never been a good fit for esports because of how hard it is to understand what’s going on.
I refuse to believe that. They sell skins for 20+ dollars for a game with 41 characters, most with at least 40+ skins. Also they made bank on the Sojourn skin for the OWL crowdfunding prize pool, so that fact is undeniably.
I really think it’s just a bunch of old fossils in upper management who don’t care about the quality of the game and just view it as a pump and dump, get-rich-quick scheme.
And who gets the majority of those skins? A very small, select pool of heroes with big money making potential. The Overwatch Team does not have the liberty to make cool, interesting skins for characters who won’t sell as much anymore, which is why Venture has literally nothing. It’s also why heroes release without a full set of cosmetics like they used to, because they can’t afford to spend loads of time on heroes who might not have good money making potential.
It doesn’t matter how much bank the game makes, it’s up to Blizzard to make monetisation decisions for the game, and now that it’s under F2P, literally everything needs to be ‘worth it’ in the company’s eyes.
Again, Overwatch is not what it was back in the day, when it was on everyone gamer’s lips, and all gaming headlines, so one decent roll-in of cash isn’t gonna change the way they market the game going forward sadly
never seen a full cinematic. when i buy a game i want the game, that i bought, to be enjoyable, to play, cause its a game. if u want cinematics u dont have to buy the game, go on freaking youtube
story, lore and characters was a big part of the mega succes overwatch 1 was in 2016, even those who dont care for it have to admit it, everyone wanted to see the characters doing things, trying to hide it only makes the game fail more and more
