What determines your role?

You always hear people say Im a tank main or im a support main or dps but what does that mean to you? Why did “You” pick that role to align yourself with?

The “Flow” that it has? (Why I play support) a specific hero in that role? What?

Maybe if we find out what makes tank players wanna tank (Outside of masochism) we can also attract more tank players!

Tank. It is the only role I’ve ever found consistent fun.

DPS until this season was a lot of shooting and nothing happening. Support I refuse to heal bot, so I suck at support and thus can’t be bothered to play it.

I would rather not self identify as a DPS main if I am being quite honest. It is just the truth based on my queue habits. I only play tank or support while doing the weekly challenges.

I was a tank main when they allowed tanks to be alpha. Hog and Mauga just eviscerating lobbies was extremely enjoyable. I had more fun back then. It’s just not the same ever since they became pacifist Carebears.

I like playing TANK because hearing my teammates insulting me is hilarious.

I’m a Mei/Cassidy Main player. I whine and cry making post how Tanks/Supports are no skilled and OP monsters. I’m doing my role right?

Ahh I see we got us a Profesional in here.

ive always played healer type characters…from WoW, to other MMO’s, so it naturally followed suit in OW. I like the idea of helping others, to enable them to perform better, but, also, after many many years of gaming, you realize that, being dps is such a one sided role and can, over time, get stale. Healing and tanking allows you to have a different way to contribute to the game, rather than just the standard “do damage get kills”. if that makes any sense.

Can’t forget whine about lesser skill DPS heroes as well getting killed by them. Whine that Hitscan/Genji is weak when a Baptiste or Moira kills me. We DPS players are special breed of cringe

I mostly play supports and tanks because I want to be “the helper”. I want to protect my teammates, keep them alive against enemy fire and set them up to succeed. I don’t have much of an interest in being the big flashy play-making superstar of the team, I’m just there to help others out in whatever way I can.
(Not to say you can’t make flashy plays or be the MVP on tank/support. Obviously you can, and it can be very fun, but it’s not why I’m personally drawn to these roles)

I’m not a role main. I basically just queue a role because I want to play a specific hero, and if I’m not on that hero on the role it’s because my hero is being hardcountered. Season 9 changed this, but before that I played all three roles, though I can’t really be called a flex player when 90% of my playtime was mei illari doom.

Tank main, reporting in.

Because the heroes were the most fun to me. Rein and Zarya were my first loves, but Dva swiftly emerged as a favorite. And then I found Winston and everything was right in the world.

Later Ball and tank Doom both proved to be tremendously fun, though my Doom in particular is AWFUL.

I also genuinely enjoy the kits of both Ram and JQ.

There are no dps heroes who sctatch those itches, there just isn’t.

The roles picked me because I had my fav heroes during beta of ow. But after launch I played what was best for the team to win.

Every flex player had to pick Tank or Support because everyone else immediately locked in DPS.

Then the worst dev decision came for flex players went 222 because switch creativity got limited and at times you got stuck with player that really more used to playing DPS than the other roles.

Today outside of completing a tank challenge I play mostly support because tank is trash

I love avia simulations and i wanted to be a doctor when i was a kid, so many decades later im main Mercy

Uh let’s see here…

Support to help team but team doesn’t always help in return; fine.

Finally gets a big play but dps get credit; fine.

Tank blows up from a fart; not fine but I can’t do anything about it.

Dps complain I killed them once when they ganked me 10 times and I kept my mouth shut; also fine…I guess. At this point I’m used to it.

Oh wait is this OW we’re talking about or just in general…

Oopsie.

I play support because I like aiding the team and being the contributor in the shadows.

So, I want to preface this by saying I’m not bragging.

I’ve always been very competitive but in a very specific way. I enjoy playing support and healer characters/classes because I like being what I call the ‘silent carry’. And by that I mean I like doing my job so well that if there was anybody else playing that class in that situation, you would not succeed as well or in the same way as you do with me on your team.

This is the attitude that got me to the #1 spot as both healer and tank during my WoW career on every server I played on. I enjoy challenging myself in that role by doing stuff like grabbing just a tank and myself and doing a difficult dungeon as a duo. I do this is in every game I play.

And when it comes to PVP this is still my attitude but instead of straight up healers I tend to gravitate more toward utility support/disruptors/crowd control specialists—basically in PVP I like to play whatever class or hero is going to annoy the enemy the most.

All THAT said, in Overwatch I am mostly a support main now—I play Zenyatta with a side of Moira and Kiriko, but I’m also a DPS player and former DPS OTP and… I play Pharah. And pretty much only Pharah. I can play other heroes but not to the degree I can play her, even after her changes, which really only enhanced my dive bomb/harassment playstyle anyway. I enjoy playing Sombra but I find myself to be hit or miss on her so I don’t play her often. I should learn Genji as he can be super annoying but I’ve always been afraid to try to learn him because everyone always made/makes him out to be some super high skill hero that you better be 100 percent naturally gifted at playing or you’re throwing so… I don’t lol.

I started off as Tank, realized more often than not there isnt anyone doing any DPS.

Then started into DPS to fix the problem myself on my team i usually play with.

Then realized to actually do solid DPS you need solid support and while I am dying I see my supports doing DPS next to me or doing stupid thing.

Now, fast forward - I’m a solid support main. Lifeweaver mainly cause I am sick and tired of my team doing stupid things and exploding or complaining about “not enough heals”.

Fixed it, only at my own self sacrifice.

Hmm, maybe if the game was about HEROES (unique characters) and not ROLES (restrictive gimmick used by devs who cant balance the game), there wouldnt have to be a discussion about “no one playing tank waah”.

Remove role lock. Go back to 6v6. Get a spine ,devs. Man up for once. (Or women/they up)

supp right now feel pathetic , can’t heal anybody with this idiotic dps passive wich last way too much.

tank is horrible as you gotta solo tank and supp can’t heal thanks to the dps passive

so I pick the only role who don’t have any issue
