What can be done about 6V6’s queue times? Lite edition

I’m sorry about the post spam, but I’m doing this on mobile and I only realise just how big the damn paragraph I’m writing is when I post it.

Just discuss amongst yourselves, before I out-write every English teacher on Earth again…

Open Queue with role limits on Tank or a format change out of 2/2/2. Thats really about it.

I dont think adding new heroes significantly helps with queue times. It feels like whenever a Tank is added queues get better for like a week tops. I think the problem people have with tanks is a lot more a base problem with what the role is expected to do vs a lack of varied kits.

There might be an option here for mixing open queue and role queue. Maybe by allowing one of the tanks to be a flex slot instead? Im not sure how great thatll work in reality. Itd probably lead to a lot of very salty games when flex doesnt just pick tank anyways.

Seperate DPS only competitive ladder with more traditional FPS modes, and slightly different balance. Split the DPS queue up to bring that role more in line with the other 2.

Give the muh skillz types something to brag about without ruining everyone else competitive experience.

The solutions that come to mind are 132 RQ or 6v6 role limited OQ (two tanks max, other roles unlimited). No-one believes that 132 won’t be a nightmare so I imagine it’s role limits or bust.

There aren’t enough tank players out there and attempts to get people into the role have failed, so the next step is not to require games to have tanks before they start, imo.

EDIT: PainWarriorX beat me to it.

Have one tank. This has been discussed to death. You can’t make people play tank, it’s always the least popular role throughout the history of the concept of having tank as a role.

Glad you all admitted that role que is your only option to have a fluid 6v6 with main players in their desired roles.

This is literally the worst answer in every conceivable way possible.

People already hate playing Tanks because it’s too much pressure, CC bullying is oppressive, and counterpicking is too easy.

On top of that people HATE having to fight super Tanks.

So in 1-3-2, Tanks will be EVEN BLOODY STRONGER to deal with having to take 6 people’s crap overload instead of 5, counterswapping is then FURTHER incentivised and as a bonus, now Supports have to deal with 3 DPS, so THEY’LL get buffed, which will be even more anti-Tank garbage.

I think there should be role limits for the other roles too, at the very least having a 1 role minimum for Tanks and Supports and a 2 Support limit as well.

And even then, add 2-2-2 RQ anyway, even if nobody plays it, I’LL play it.

You won’t like this. But this is your best option with Giga tanks now.

It’s either this with dps tuning or longer wait times.

Flats even said that 3:2:1 is probably going to be it.

Honestly not much without moving away from role lock. And personally I consider role lock to be the best thing ever added to the game. So I would rather keep that with long queue times than lose it even for instant queue times.

Things you could do.

  1. Revised priority passes - you need a pass by playing the least popular role in order to play any other role. Not to reduce your queue but to play at all. And wins give like 4 passes while losses give maybe 1.
  2. Rewards for queuing flex queue or least played that actually mean something like coins or loot boxes (yes bring them back)
  3. Role select vs role lock - forced 2/2/2 but first come first serve. You don’t queue for your role, you go Lord of the files on your teammates over who gets to play Tracer. “I’m already Tracer”. This of course has a lot of the same drawbacks as open queue but at least you still are guaranteed 2 tanks and 2 supports which is essential for the health of the game.

The 1/3/2 role queue experiment was one of the most painful awful things I’ve ever played. It’s so much worse than what we have in 5v5. It has all the problems we have now only worse.

We’re already there. Why go back to 6v6 at all then? Isn’t the entire argument for 6v6 to have 2 tanks?

6v6 does not have a queue times issue

Call me crazy but the Q time issues are overrated. Unless you’re waiting for over 30 minutes, 10 or 15 minutes for a decent match is not that big of a deal. I mean we can just keep losesning MM if it’s such a big issue but we don’t right? Because at the end of the day we want the quality of the game to be good. Having 3 awful matches tossed in your face is not better than waiting for a few extra minutes and getting a decent match.

This too

Even if 132 did manage to solve the tank bottleneck I think it’d create a new one in the support role, because dealing with tri-sniper or tri-flanker as a support was a nightmare.

Well in 5v5 we don’t have a tank bottleneck. So I don’t see a need to fix it unless we go to 6v6. But the entire reason to go to 6v6 is to have 2 tanks again. I can’t even think of another reason to do it.

I’d be for this. The bottom line is that requiring as many tanks as other roles isn’t an option, so any solution will have to allow for that.

It’s this exactly. No amount of balancing will change the popularity like some suggest. A tank’s job is weird and not very straightforward. It’s just not going to appeal to as many people even when executed perfectly.

Why go back to 6v6 at all if we don’t have 2 tanks as a requirement? It seems to me like that’s the entire reason to go back.

I don’t think we need to. I’m happy with 5v5, but I was most happy before role queue.

Remove role queue but keep role limits. Make the players sort it out.

I dunno about that. I still get tank for the vast majority of my flex games and this is after they’ve loosened the matchmaker to help things along. I feel like the lack of tanks is holding match quality back right now.
