Heck, what abilities are his biggest issues that leave him with no choice but to retreat or rely on teammates?
He can deal with barriers.
He can deal with tanks.
He can deal with aerial characters.
He can deal with flankers?
What can’t he deal with?

Hog. Rarely do i find a mcree that can best a hog. He either flashes hook or TAB one or the other leaves enough time for hog to take him out. Not to mention how most Mcrees high noon in hook range.
He wouldn’t last vs Michael Myers.
Maybe Widowmaker, but in a 1v1, don’t even bring up her name.
Hanzo, a better mcree, tracer if you can force a 1v1.

I know tracer can be insanely strong, but Cassidy has the tools to deal with flankers.

Tracer is ironically the best dps to deal with flashbang, as she can bait it with her standing on the netcode priority giving her some wiggle room to dodge it with blink. It is not a free match up, as mcree with any help to wrangle tracer has the advantage.
In terms of what actually counters him, ranged poke or coordinated dives since he can only deal with 1 threat at a time
But pretty much any hero can take him on as long as you’re good with them & the Cassidy player isn’t considerably better
Just be disproportionately better 4head.
D.Va is a good tank counter to mccree.
Long range DPS or mirror Cassidy and kill him with stun combo.
Anything that can out range him. While he’s got decent ranged poke, he excels in close quarters. Unless you can force the 1v1 and catch him off guard, he’ll always lose the ranged battle as his falloff is ridiculous.
It is only a revolver, after all

Pretty much every tank counters cree
Bap, ana, zen, brig… even mercy can be a great cree counter if you’re consistently helping your dps who’s dueling him
Ashe, widow, and soldier all outrange him an insane amount. Echo and tracer can easily kill him once he’s used flash 
Pharah is actually better against him than she used to be due to his range nerf…
Play out of his range, it’s pretty short so it should be easy 
Old Brig, maybe. The only thing you can really do as Brig now is whip shot him away from a flash target, whip him off high ground in his ult, or if he’s being ballsy and is ulting on the ground try and bash him without being shredded in the process
Cree actually struggles alot against a good brig due to her ability to protect her 2nd support and kite him at the edge of his fall-off while healing herself.
Brigs shield helps her rotate and position around him, whipshot keeps him at the edge of his fall-off, inspire will heal you as you shield dance and pack is literally a mercy beam on someone
A brig who just runs into him and tries to duel him is going to die… as she should lol… the same outcome would happen if she did the same thing to any other dps
Well he can’t really fight Sigma without ambushing him first
