Were We Gaslit?

Blizzard is a $69 billion company: Where are all their resources going? How is it that we can go so long with so little here, while MR is apparently releasing more heroes in one season than Overwatch did in all of 2024? Were we gaslit into believing that designing heroes takes a long time?

I’m beginning to get entirely disenfranchised with western gaming companies… This last year has been such an L for the west and W for the east.

To be fair to Blizzard, the heroes in Marvel Rivals were created decades ago. The Netease developers’ only job is to program them into the game.

Also from what I’ve seen, maybe they should focus on optimizing the game they have before adding in so many more characters lol

And in this first season; they were likely at least partially completed before the game came out.

Blizzard Activision was a $69 billion company. Not just Blizzard. Most of that valuation came from King and various Activision titles. The only thing really making money for Blizzard right now is the Diablo franchise.

In any case they’re risk-averse and only spend $$$ on stuff that’s proven to earn it. And even then sometimes they won’t spend.

My guy, they already designed the next 10 heroes, they are shelved and put on slow release while they milk the cash shop.

Y’all seriously need a reality check on the how gaming and free to play games work. The old heads here can’t seem to get it through their heads that overwatchs business model, is the exact same as MR’s is. Release new hero’s and sell skins and battlepasses at ridiculous prices.

And their other games, like wow and ow2. If they were losing money on them, they wouldn’t keep making new content. Plus every time there is a new skin tons of ppl are running around in them.

Yes, MR, the chinese spyware and litterally rigged matchmaking that places you against actual bots, yes that- thats our savoiur from the evil overwatch!

More heroes =/= better. I feel like thats a given.

$15 horse for WoW made more money than StarCraft 2. The money comes from skins, not content. Content takes time, planning and execution. New skins not so much.

Exactly. Every time there is a shop update, I see multiple people wearing the new skins. Especially for the collabs. I don’t know where these people get the idea that overwatch isn’t making money, lol. Every season, half the lobby has the new mythic skin.

Most of OW’s heroes are based off something. They didnt invent cowboys and ninjas and knights.

NetEase has to create new designs for basically all heroes and create basically everything but the base idea of the heroes from scratch.

Man, people around here really underestimate the amount of work it takes to grab a comic book character and implement them into a video game.

Maybe we could use this to our advantage. DC collab, maybe? Add Superman to the game as a playable hero?

It’s not hard to release new heroes when their gameplay designs are largely interchangeable. OW heroes are much deeper.

Of course they took inspiration from other things. But the heroes are still original where rivals is using characters that have existed for decades. Obviously it still takes work, but taking existing characters and already having abilities and super powers certainly makes it easier than making up characters from scratch.

The community gaslit itself, believing that more micro transactions would mean more content. Blizzard never said that the game would get better if it made more money.

So is every demographic of consumer. Specifically the demographic that has the most purchasing power and the one demonized for the last decade.

You were gaslit into believing that Bobby was the root of all the problems. Instead it was the rank and file employees that can’t validate receiving a paycheck.

2024 was the shot that critically injured the western market. Now it’s time to see if they can lick their wounds, heal up, and start going back to what works.

I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Many of ya’ll aren’t even happy with the new heroes Blizzard’s been creating. Why would rushing more off the assembly line make the game better for you?

I’m fine with Blizzard’s slow and measured approach.
