I shouldn’t even have to explain how absurd this is (or “”"“solutions”""" like “just block all messages xD”).
Having friends message me shouldn’t become an inconvenience until I close the game.
The game can’t even be bothered to close the channel for you when you’re unable to send a private message (someone adds/then Blocks me to say “kys” after a match, friend is offline, friend won’t see the message in their chat settings or another Blizzard game, etc etc).
The /leavechannel command already exists and I’ve yet to hear a decent explanation as to why we can’t just use it.

You know when you launch the game, right? Let’s pretend you never leave the main menu for now.
Enter opens chat. You have one Channel, General.
If someone DMs you while you’re in-game, you now have 2 Channels, General and that DM.
Let’s pretend I want to go back to just having 1 Channel
(and let’s also pretend that I’m just a horribly uncompromising person, pretend no one else on the forum has been talking about this for the past 5 years, pretend the issue doesn’t get exponentially worse when you also have to manage more than one DM on top of Match/Team/Group chat, and pretend that without me complaining, having to cycle through an extra channel indefinitely is good UI design)
I can’t. My only option is to close and re-launch OW. This is the problem I’m arguing against and if your solution is to just bend over and take it then congrats, don’t use the /leavechannel command if it ever becomes functional, you still win.
This hides every chat channel, including mid-game comms from teammates. Not a solution.
Most of the time =/= always. Maybe it’s the type of crowd /you/ attract but most of the time I’ve been added it’s been to group up or something. In case this isn’t clicking, my example was SPECIFICALLY about times the direct message Channel becomes useless, but please go on about your solution of “just dont use chat” I already responded to before you got here, I’ll totally listen
“Means” is a funny word on this forum. ‘Not sure how you accessed all my games’ chat logs and determined I’m only adding toxic people with my specific example explained above, but thanks so much for the tip, this makes the chat system in the game function better
I’ve noticed them randomly disappearing (the best kind) in the past, so I actually left my game on this whole time, with the Channel open, and it’s still there, approaching Hour 2.
Even if it were just “wait 1 hour lol” (and we never accidentally message the wrong Channel and refresh that timer, it’s not like I see that CONSTANTLY in-game between even non-DM Channels or anything), I have no clue where the game gets off telling me when my conversation sleep timer is

If you’re not talking all game and someone is saying stuff like and I quote
I guess if this is happening to you then you also attract the wrong people lol
show me where in that message I told you not to use the chat lol
Also if the above rarely happens to you then you probably haven’t played this game very long, I decline all friend requests because in GM and Masters for playing Moira and not meta you get friend requests telling you horrible stuff, so why would I want to accept them?
You know the only times I’ve received nice friend requests is when I’m playing supports that isn’t Moira lol but yes, me as a person is attracting all these bad people, cause it’s totally my personality and not the hero I’m playing

Yes, I do sometimes call users on my Blizzard App Friends List “friends”, to the exclusion of your reading comprehension, and that probably won’t change any time soon.
Also, you know you can just, like… wait to reply until you’re done typing, right? I’ve seen you make like 8 drastic edits in the middle of this (while I’m replying, thanks), are you sure you’re not straining yourself or something?
You can also use the feature to set it so only the people in your “favourites” on your friend list can message you in game

Also here is one for Team and Match chat too, but this one only works per session (so if you close/reopen the game you’ll have to click on these 2 again in your first match, or do it in the training ground)

I don’t know what made you think I’d take your victim card after your opener of “stop getting harassed lol” followed by complete and explicit disregard for what I’m actually saying in my replies, and I don’t know what faulty radar you’re using that skipped over my own neurological/mental disorders-- you could have interacted with this chat format perfectly and I’d still want to call you out for what you actually said and refused to read,

That’s a good feature. It would be great if I could, you know, use the chat and have it not be broken instead of regressing away from convenience like this is some opt-in beta, but I’ll probably just leave this perma-on, thanks.
Yeah, I messed up implying the command was useless per se, I moreso meant that the functionality is already in the game’s chat system, and that I want to be able to use that command for more than just public channels. Plus, if you DO use that command, you have the inverse problem-- you’re out forever lol
edit: just saw your updates, but also wanted to add on that the /leavechannel command can potentially lock you out of other commands by just not giving you anywhere to type them lol. Maybe the thread should have been “OW’s whole chat system is kinda broken and im angy”, but this specific issue, I HOPED, was straight-forward to start with… … …
