We need MMR Reset ASAP

I think we’ve never needed a MMR Reset so bad as now. (I’m not an English speaker so if something sounds weird just forgive me, I’m trying)

As long as Overwatch 2 is so far away and we won’t have any major content updates until then, we need the rank games to be interesting.

The problem comes from the RoleQ, it came up without a MMR Reset, so for example in my case, I was 4.2k on Support and 4k in tank and dps. My real rank shouldn’t be GM just because my main role was 4.2k, it makes no sense that if I wanna play tank or dps I get matched with people +4.2k because no one wants to play tank. And the same thing happens the other way around, if I want to tryhard on my main role, I don’t want people offroling whose SR isn’t actually the current one. This has been happening since the RoleQ came up, but with the ticket system it went WAY worse, because the system is forcing people (like DPS or Supports) to play flex to get tickets (and flex means TANK most of the time). And as long as the SR and MMR are messed up after 26 seasons with no reset at all, games feel unfair and they are based on who have less people offroling in their team.

I’m talking as an Overwatch content creator now. You don’t wanna bring new heroes or maps to Overwatch 1 until OW 2 comes out? That’s fine, but you have to fix the rank system then, because that’s the only thing we have to keep making interesting content, and believe me, we are working really hard, but it gets even harder if we don’t have any motivation to play it.

Season 27 starts tomorrow. And the only reward we have are competitive points, to get another golden weapon (I have 16 already, tomorrow I’ll get my 17th). As soon as Season 26 ends, Season 27 starts right away, and season placements are useless, because you’ll appear around -100/+100 points where you ended depending on your wins or loses (except if you were +4k). In other words: it’s like playing regular 5 rank games, that’s it, it doens’t really “place” you anywhere else.

Our only reward are competitive points, an icon and a spray. We don’t have Season skins, a Battle Pass, Missions or Challenges, or anything to make us play the game, rank up and try harder.

I love this game and I really want to keep playing it, but we really need something like this to motivate us and keep playing rank games, which is the only thing we have while we wait for Overwatch 2 to come up.

An MMR reset is extremely unlikely as it would result in everyone across all ranks playing with each other and would take months to properly sort out. Here are the exact words from Principal Designer Scott Mercer from the July 2020 Reddit AMA:

Also, the Overwatch team doesn’t want to encourage people to play Competitive for reasons outside of improving their own skill. This is why Golden Weapons are the only things that can be earned with Competitive Points and End-of-Season Rewards are more or less momentos to celebrate each season. To my knowledge, there are no plans at this time to add more.

UPDATE: With the recent bug that locked out Competitive Play on the new patch, I was told there are no planned changes (including keeping the MMR where it is) for season 27.

It wasnt, they were tracking your performance on other roles and checked how well you were doing on them on average and made an educated guess on where you should be from those stats, if you dont have much or any time on them you’d be starting from the same starting point as everyone else doing comp for the first time, and if there was chance for large variation where you definitely shouldnt be there the ranked system would give you massive sr swings for the first few matches if they didnt thing they had enough data

I totally agree, in this times when we won’t have content for so long (undefined) we crave for better ranked games so we can still enjoy the game, the best way to “refresh” Overwatch 1 without putting too much resources is as simple as giving an MMR Reset to everyone.

Thing is that instead of losing, I won the games, so I got even higher (because once you are placed after RoleQ it’s based on win/loses not on performance). But that’s no the point here.

If you wanna play off-roles with your real rank on them, you need to buy a new account. Streamers and other top 500 campers do it all the time, to get a better mmr than it counting old stats. Game is designed that way

Same is if you want to play comp with friends, you can’t because there is a 500-1000 sr limit, which can’t even be by-passed with a 6-stack. Need a new account/smurf.

Overwatch team helps with MMR issues and playing with friends issues by making overwatch be on sale pretty often

I mean yeah…? But what happens if you lose all 5? The ranks would be all messed up and it could legit take years to sort all of this up.

Although it is very unlikely, although it will take time for things to stabilize after a reset of mmr, I think it is at least what is necessary to avoid meeting people who are not at the level that shows in their range. I am a player of gold / platinum rank and many of the people that I have met always say the same thing “This is not my main role, I just want tickets” they spoil the experience of new players and they subtract the little seriousness that the player has competitive game.

so you’re saying, you CAN very much play tank at a 4k level otherwise you wouldnt have won the games you would have lost most of them due to the tank diff

And how is resetting mmr going to stop people from using the flex queue and playing roles they aren’t good at…? It would be even a bigger mess the competitive play could potentially be ruined

This is gonna be a vent from a player that is sick of seeing how ranked is abused…

An MMR reset is 100% needed when it comes down to:

  • Old players coming back years later and placing in a rank they don’t know how to play in anymore.

  • The sheer amount of suspicious bronze bordered accounts that are bought through online websites. People can buy a GM account for the same price as a Triple-A game.

  • The “Place at 3900” doesn’t impact anything since MMR will put people back to their deserved rank within a week of playing.

The system in its current state rewards easy Top 500 camping, alt account/new account abusing and account selling while peoples main accounts are safe.

Most of GM+ complain about unbalanced lobbies but the game has no decay so people can camp whatever SR they want, no MMR reset, no balanced games (You can legit get a 3600 player in a 4400+ lobby) and even when high-end pro players/streamers that are dedicated to ranked and are asking for these changes we get shut down.

The game was falling apart as soon as the complexities of Role Queue was added…

and an MMR would stop that how? Those websites would have another set of bronze level accounts in a week

It wasn’t really supposed to, it was just meant to give you a reason to play to get your rank back instead of just doing placements and keeping the same rank as before

This is the only thing an MMR reset would actually help with, but they don’t even need to a full reset on all accounts they can just do a check on when was the last time they played comp and if they meet a certain amount of months reset their mmr

I’m not talking about preventing them from playing roleQ, if not doing a correct spacing, I hate in platinum that my tankmate plays at my level just because his main role is like mine, doing an MMR reset or calculating the rank individually Without relying on the performance of the player in another role, it would help to improve the experience of many players who, like me, play in a way that will improve and raise their rank.

All it is, is a curtain over the eyes of the player.
I am 4200 rn. I place next season and it will show my SR at 3900. But it will queue me in 4200 average games via the MMR. It does nothing other that hide how unbalanced lobbies are in the early season.

Yes I know that, thats exactly how its supposed to work, the only reason it was added was to make you want to care enough to do more than your placements and climb up to that shiny 4200 number again, they were extremely transparent about this being its only purpose

It would stop the amount of Masters/Low GM accounts that hover around there when their main average is diamond or lower. 50% wr is enough to stay there so if they get carried then they’re fine to stay rotting in an elo they don’t belong. They can buy 1 account once and stick around an area they don’t belong. Even 1 MMR reset every year, not every season, would be enough to curb down on the amount of accounts like this atm.

I just don’t think the positive things outweigh the negatives. Doing an mmr reset is a very risky thing that has a huge chance of going wrong. That’s why they don’t do it.
