We need less DPS players

I don’t think many would argue that match making hasn’t largely been compromised in an effort to keep queue times low. And with the possibility of 6v6, queue times may yet again become a pressing matter.

The issue with queue times is not so much a matter of total player numbers, but ratios between the roles. 1:2:2 in the case of 5v5 or 2:2:2 in the case of 6v6.

Much like an ecosystem, if any one animal or plant becomes too few or too numerous, the natural balance is disrupted. And if that balance remains imbalanced for too long, it threatens to undermine and destroy everything as the ecosystem collapses.

How does one fix this? Well it’s quite simple. If an ecosystem is out of balance, there are but 2 options:

  1. Import new organisms
  2. Cull the herd

Long have the devs attempted to increase the number of players queuing up for non-DPS roles by attempting to appeal to the DPS player base. Essentially, they have sought option 1. It makes sense and I cannot blame them for seeking this, but I don’t think it has been very successful.

And because this has largely been so unsuccessful, other concessions have been made that ultimately have left the game feeling worse.

But again, I assert that all of this is the direct result of imbalance. And if we want balance, perhaps it’s time to consider option 2. After all, if we cannot import more deer into our forest, perhaps it’s time that we have less wolves.

It’s time to cull the herd. More specifically, it’s time that we shrink our DPS player population.

Now of course we cannot force anyone to leave, but I’m sure we can find creative ways to do so. Perhaps more leaning into tank and support power fantasies and making pew pew more difficult.

Sure, some DPS players will get fed up and leave, but that’s the point. Their absence will result in a more harmonious balance between the roles. And those DPS that are left will more likely be the kind of DPS players you want anyways.

DPS players who recognize that the game cannot simply revolve around their play experience. We need DPS players who aren’t selfish and see the big picture. We need DPS players who are willing to make sacrifices for the sake of the game.

A cull is never what anyone wants, but sometimes it’s necessary.

EDIT: Some great ideas have come from the discussion in this thread! I really like having more DPS only spaces to spread out that player population. They get to pew pew without all the healing and mitigation and everyone else gets a more streamlined experience in modes that need all 3 roles.

The game is a first-person shooter, and the dps role is the pinnacle of shooter mechanics in OW. You aren’t getting rid of them, and you aren’t going to convert them to other roles. There are a ton of players that just want to shoot in a shooter. Shocking concept, I know.

Oh we need shooters.

We just need less of them.

Yeah those selfish dps players lets drive them out of the game so the game can revolve around OUR experience
Ive seen chatbots with more self-awareness

I don’t dislike DPS players. We need them. They’re a critical part of the ecosystem.

But if you have too many deer, you need more wolves. And if you have too many wolves, you need more deer.

What happens if you cannot get more? You have to downsize. You have to cull.

Calling for balance between the roles isn’t wanting non-DPS roles to be prioritized, but when you’re the privileged balance feels like oppression.

I’m a dps player. I’ve already mostly quit. I didn’t switch to tank or support.

GL with your agenda.

So, you’re essentially asking to upset the majority of the players and force them to quit.

Would the remaining support and tank players purchase more skins to maintain Blizzard’s stock stability?

The hardest challenge for the upcoming 6v6 tests will be the diversity of DPS players compared to the Tank players. We can only hope, wish, pray that DPS mains will be more inclined to Tank in a 6v6 Role Queue format.:pray:

Bad bait. Try again please.

You’re not understanding that it’s not that more dps need to quit playing or find a different role; it’s that we need to get rid of role queue all together.

We need to bring back priority passes and make them actually work. No more flexing for one game to get 40 passes.

Good luck with that, blizz would actually need to have balanced roles then
No seriously, good luck cause my faith in this game disapeared with role q.maybe that would restore it

Companies downsize all the time to maintain stability.

Again, it’s never something a company wants to do, but sometimes it’s time to accept that it’s what you have to do.

I played OW before role queue and it was terrible.

Games were often decided by which team had a reasonable ratio between tank, support and DPS (there’s that darn ratio stuff again).

Everyone wants to be a wolf, and no one wants to be a deer. But unfortunately you need both to make the game work.

I think that’s why they’re discussing trying role limits (no more than 2 per role)

They downsize their teams not their client base.
This dude gots to be trolling, this is unreal

Argue the logic.

They’ve tried option 1 for years and have failed.

There’s only one other option.
