One of the things I really love about Overwatch is the ability to represent your country with your flag as a player icon. It’s not just limited to flags of heroes or locations in Overwatch; New Zealanders, Belgians, Romanians, and even Finns are able to fly their country’s flag as their character icon. It seems awfully unfair to Taiwan, a country that not only has a higher population but certainly more gamers to be unable to represent their people. Blizzard should do the right thing and give the Taiwanese a way to show national pride.
National pride is for nerds.
I don’t think that lines up with Blizzard’s history of appeasing China though.
From what I remember, China has a one-nation policy and doesn’t consider Taiwan a separate country.
Unlikely. Winnieland is screwing Actiblizzion as much as it’s screwing the world health organization.
Not-so-fun-fact: Zenyatta was originally from Tibet. They later quietly changed it to Nepal
While looking for the source I found this old comment that goes into a bit more detail on the topic:
It makes more sense if you wonder why a Nation like Palestine isn’t represented ingame. Taiwan isn’t widely recognized as an independent Nation throughout the world, just as Palestine isn’t widely recognized either (although having much more recognition than Taiwan).
I wouldn’t pin this all on “BlIZz Is JusT ApPEasiNG CHiNA!!!”. The same could be said for Palestine and Blizz just “appeasing” the USA.
The funniest part is that of all the African nations they represent, they don’t represent South Africa or Nigeria, but they do have Jordan.
Nomen has 1 post on the forums and this is the welcome you give them you’d make a great host or hostess
I for one love this idea Overwatch already represents so many countries why not represent those countries who don’t have a character in game yet?

This exact topic came up not too long ago. Actually I believe it was WyomingMyst who stopped by that thread to offer up some details.
Surprisingly, there are legal considerations that have to be made about having a flag represented in your game. Yes, really. And troubles securing permission are not limited to one or two countries, either.
I will say this, though. I don’t know about circumstances regarding Taiwan right now, but I recall reading a newspaper article a few years ago (somewhere in the realm of 2010) that said a new president had just been elected in Taiwan, and in a surprisingly warm diplomatic gesture from China, the Chinese president called up him to congratulate him.
I hope I’m remembering that accurately. But I’d also like to add that even if relations between the two are…tense, at times. That doesn’t mean it will always be so. America and Britain used to war heavily with each other right after that whole unsightly revolution thing, but they’ve been best buds for the better part of a century now. Given enough time and the right circumstances, good things may come about, yet.
Unlikely but I would like it. Not even being political I just think it looks nice.
They do every flag they legally can.
It’s a little more complicated than that. Read what Xorkrath just said.
Blizzard doesn’t want to piss off China so that will never happen. Maybe a “Chinese Taipei” flag at best.
But wouldn’t it be funny if we get a hero from Taiwan? That would suggest in the world of Overwatch, three quarters of the 21st century has passed and Taiwan is still independent. That would really grind their gears.
idk if this is the case here but they can’t use some flags for legal reasons.
I completely missed that comment but still calling someone a nerd for national pride is wrong that is what I was trying to get across most of all
But here’s a virtual hug for your help

So is Overwatch
True, there’s nothing wrong with some healthy patriotism
