I can tell you, from the perspective of some who plays a short range DPS, that…
…you do not want this. The gameplay will be miserable unless they make them hyper-mobile, in which it will be miserable to play against.

Melee DPS just kinda don’t work conceptually. They’re destined to either be extremely oppressive or trash. Doomfist was like this and he wasn’t even strictly a melee DPS. Venture is only like 50% of the way there and they’re widely hated.
Most I could see is like a swordsman whose attacks fling oil/energy and happens to do extra damage in melee range, but is still mostly balanced around the projectile part. (tbh if Asa ever gets added I expect them to be exactly this)

Doesn’t work as a concept, so no.
This guy would never be good in this game, he needs to insanely fast and tanks to not get deleted by every character in this game that has any range (all but 2 characters)
If they make him tanky, it’s just reinhardt but dps, really no point in adding them

If they were to implement a melee dps, I’d imagine them to be like the heroes or villains in Star Wars battlefront 2
If DPS Doom was hated enough for being melee based I doubt a melee based dps of any sorts will fare well, especially in a game with one less tank.
He wasn’t hated for “being melee” I’d argue.
He was hated for having a lot of CC and a oneshot on a short cooldown.

Which I would argue is kinda necessary for a melee based dps, otherwise there is zero way to close in the distance and survive. (Even then Doom was basically useless unless the enemy was playing without a headset lol)

The issue wasn’t that Doomfist had a lot of CC. It was more or less the fact that he had multiple stuns built into his kit. But everybody was so worried about Brig… who had one stun
But how does he attack? I mean, when he attacks like rein, brig or basic melee attack just with a different visual weapon, then there’s no point to have him.

Just because he is stupid and doesn’t use it… Claims he is better with one yet watches his teammates die over and over and doesn’t use it.
I think the next sword champ will be their teacher though; Kirikos mother.

That hero is named Junker Queen. Her original design was as a melee dps. Aaron Keller and his 5v5 fetish slapped a commanding shout on her, added some hp, threw her into the tank pool and called it a day.
JQ as she is is really cool, though, so good on Aaron.
