We need a melee DPS hero

A hero archetype sorely missing from the game right now is a melee range-focused DPS hero. We did used to have DPS Doomfist, but for better or worse, he got moved to tank.

I know there is a melee tank on the horizon, but I wanted to explore what a fire based melee DPS that doesn’t have crowd control or a one-shot would look like. Let me know what you think.

Summary

Category: Damage
Bella “Sol” Solamucci
Origin: Rome, Italy (Colosseo)
Female Incendiary Gladiator
Health: 225 HP, 25 armor (250 total)

Passives

Passive: Heat of Battle

Igniting an enemy or eliminating a burning enemy instantly heals any missing armor.

Passive: Hot Foot

Move 10% faster than most other heroes (6 meters per second).

Left Click (Starblaze Sword)

Primary Fire (Left Click): Starblaze Sword
Range: 6 meters
Fire rate: 1 swing every 0.7 seconds
Damage per swing: 70
Damage per second: 100 + 15 burn (115 total)

Pressing Left Click swings Sol’s Starblaze Sword, a one-handed hilt whose blade glows molten orange and bursts into flames every time it strikes an enemy. Deals damage in a narrow vertical slashing arc.

Each hit also sets the target(s) on fire, dealing 15 burn damage per second for 2 seconds for a total of 30 extra damage. Hitting an enemy while they are already on fire refreshes their burn duration. Quick Melee swings Starblaze Sword instead of being a separate attack.

Right Click (Starblock Shield)

Alternate Fire (Right Click): Starblock Shield
Cooldown: 1 second

Deploys a small sun-shaped shield that glows orange in Sol’s left hand. While active, gain 30% damage resistance from the front at the cost of a 30% movement speed penalty (which ignores Hot Foot’s speed bonus) and the inability to use Starblaze Sword while active.

Starblock Shield has a resource meter with a max active duration of 3 seconds that starts recharging 1 second after not being in use. Takes 10 seconds to fully recharge from an empty meter.

Right Click + Left Click (Parry)

Alternate Fire (hold) + Primary Fire: Parry
Cooldown: 8 seconds
Duration: 0.75 seconds

A prompt to activate Parry with Left Click will be visible on screen while Starblock Shield is active. Sol swings Starblock Shield once in front of her while lunging horizontally 10 meters in the direction she is moving. Lunge will stop short if Sol collides with an enemy; the collision deals 40 impact damage and ignites the enemy Sol hits. Can only collide with a single enemy.

While she is lunging, Sol also parries all projectile and hitscan damage from the direction she is facing using her shield swing. Parried damage is deflected directly to the crosshair, and in addition to dealing damage, also ignites the target(s) it hits for 2 seconds. Parrying blocks but does not deflect melee damage. Able to parry projectile ultimates.

Shift (Sunburst)

Ability 1 (Shift): Sunburst
Cooldown: 6 seconds per charge
Has 2 charges
Projectile speed: 80 meters per second
Impact damage: 90
Burn damage: 15 per second for 2 seconds
Total damage: 120

Sol throws her Starblock Shield at an enemy, which damages and ignites the target, then ricochets back after impact. Hitting an enemy already on fire refreshes their burn duration. Unable to use abilities until Starblock Shield is retrieved.

E (Zipline Flare)

Abilty 2 (E): Zipline Flare
Cooldown: 14 seconds
Zipline riding speed: 20 meters per second

Sol fires from a flare gun that can stick into distant objects; flare will explode mid-air after traveling 30 meters. Whether or not it explodes, Sol rapidly rides the flare’s trail like a zipline by connecting it overhead to her Starblock Shield. Press Jump to disembark early.

Sol is able to use Starblaze Sword while traveling on the Zipline Flare but not her other abilities or ultimate. Teammates cannot use the zipline. Flare and explosion go through enemies and barriers and ignite anyone they hit but deal no other damage.

Q/Ultimate (Supernova)

Ultimate (Q): Supernova
Duration: 6 seconds
Cast time: 0.5 seconds
Immobilized while casting
Voiceline (hostile): “Bruciare in cenere!” (“Burn to ashes!”)
Voiceline (friendly): “Feel the Sun’s fury!”

Sol raises Starblaze Sword above her head, unleashing a huge ring of fire in a 15 meter radius centered on Sol. All enemies in the radius, even those behind barriers, take 40 impact damage from the ring and become singed. Singed enemies receive 100% increased burn damage the next time they are set on fire (30 per second instead of 15) and will have the “Singed” status effect displayed on screen for the next 6 seconds.

Enemies who were already on fire when getting singed will not have their burn damage doubled until they are reignited. Initial ring of fire will not ignite enemies on its own. Singed burns can be applied more than once in the 6 seconds the ultimate is active. Abilities that cleanse like Recall and Fade will remove the “Singed” status early.

Activating Supernova will also remove Sunburst’s cooldown for the duration of the ultimate. Sunburst can be thrown up to 8 times during Supernova. When Supernova ends, Sunburst will have both cooldowns refreshed.

Perks

Minor Perks:

Napalm Coating:

The enemy ignited with Parry’s collision burns 200% longer (6 seconds) and spreads the extended burn to nearby allies within 5 meters upon death if still on fire.

Scorching Corona:

Sunburst’s impact damage is increased by 70% (150 damage) when hitting deployable objects; destroying a deployable object with Sunburst refreshes both cooldown charges.

Major Perks:

Phalanx:

Starblaze Sword can be used during Starblock Shield while Parry is on cooldown and gains 30% increased attack speed whenever Starblock Shield is active.

Blitz:

Starblock Shield no longer has a speed penalty and while active grants Hot Foot an extra 30% speed boost; contact with enemies during Starblock Shield now also ignites them.

I know technically venture isn’t a melee hero but they really feel like one!

we have one with a shield and mace, but yea it would have been cool if brig had a sword

still she is the “cleric” of overwatch. mace and shield or a war priest

They are basically DPS Doomfist’s replacement. Another reason that I don’t like them. I’m not a fan of melee DPS typically, especially if they do a lot of CC

I imagine the sword in the hero concept is closest to the Gladius, assuming it is onehanded.

You can have functional DPS melee heroes when there are functional anti-dive DPS options.

Do you want to incorporate more disables in the DPS role?

You are in luck, you can play a fish wielding melee character in Team Fortress 2 right now. The Scout’s Holy Mackarel is a fun meme item.

Isn’t TF2 the game where half the lobby consists of snipers staring at the sky and farting snowflakes?

Give us our Lord Shadow sama!
ULTIMATE : I AM ATOMIC

I will put it this way.

Rivals can have spiderman, black panther, iron fist, etc because they also didnt utterly destroy their anti-dive anti-mobility hores like Namor, Wanda and Mr Fanta.

OW released Doomfist at the same time they started butchering Torb, Symmetra, Sombra, etc.

Does that mean I want more disables? Maybe, maybe the game needs more hinder than stuns. But in general anti-mobilicheese damage is also at a historic low.

I wasn’t asking in an antagonizing fashion, I don’t necessarily disagree with you. Maybe my perspective is unique because I enjoy playing current Torb and Sombra into dive. Same with Brig.

Sorry, I didnt assume it was. I am just putting that up because OW kinda has destroyed its own ability to self-regulate through its intended focus on counterpicks.

It is a well known fact that Tracer barely has any counterpick.

The closest is Torbjorn now that he has the wall turret perk and it’s part of why I love playing him.

AFAIK they have mostly fixed the Sniper bot issue and if you encounter it more than two games in a row, just switch to a community hosted server. Either way, they always get instantly votebanned from the match once one shows up
