He took pride in his work and didn’t want to be apart of this new F2P/battle pass trash business model future that Blizzard is now embracing. Not every decision he made with the game was perfect, but his vision for OW was a hell of a lot better than the garbage it is turning into now.
I don’t know if they edited it but I literally read on the official OW2 website something about several heroes being released upon OW2… we have 1 more hero to add for launch and we already know who it is (kanezaka fox girl).
OW2 is looking more and more underwhelming tbh. It’s obvious this will be extremely predatory (as bad as apex most likely). Starting to look like a cash-grab that some said it was…
Also PvE looking like it wont be a 1 time purchase now and it will be split into mulitple purchases…
I thought Jeff Kaplan liked the idea of battle passes? Wasn’t he inspired by the seasonal challenge content of Diablo 3?
You mean a slightly different version of io who is a wolf girl with a spirit wolf companion and is a support in paladins?
Io also has a fox so…even more similar
I kinda miss the guy and his update videos with his head poking out of a t-shirt 10 sizes too big for him saying we needed to buff all these already OP characters.
If this “fox girl” hero has a bow…that means blizz literally copied io
I wouldn’t say the lead was a whole lot better while Jeff was still around.
I feel like f2p was last second idea. They just realized they have nothing to show.
The battlepass was probably there from the start though since the whole OW2 was just to change monetization.
He did say he was but I would assume he would’ve wanted it to be unique in some way or atleast not combined with a store. Maybe setup like Halo’s where it isn’t limited time.
I would hate to be Jeff right now seeing something I poured years of my life into and so much passion just drained for profit with 0 respect for the future players and even less for the existing fans. Must be the same as how people like George Lucas felt.
Yeah Jeff totally left for this AND DEFINITELY NOT ALL BAD PR, FRAT BOY CULTURE LAWSUITS that came out like 5 weeks after he left. Totally.
Which he may be involved too
but I do think there is another reason: He wasn’t a fan of 5v5 and the general direction the game got pushed
yes… but im pretty sure that they dont charge the players, THAT ALREADY OWN THE GAME, $40.
… for a FREE game’s beta
really… its a “free games beta.”
last time I checked… I paid $40 back in 2017 for ps4… then again in 2019 for the PC game
He is to blame for all the bad balance updates and obsession over an imaginary state of balance over the fun of the game. Thank God he left. They even stated they are focusing on fun now and only after on balance.
I played a few seasons of Diablo 3, and no- they definitely do not charge players for each season (thankfully).
Lord forgive me i know ill still buy it
yeah and i hope that geoff left ow soon.
I’m super interested what these creative revenue opportunities these exciting microtransactions might bring.
due to Kaplan, overwatch was such a success.
He was the man who created a game that was nominated as GOTY in 2016. His game sold dozens of millions copies and made billions out of lootboxes without aggressive monetization tactics.
Blizzards owes the game’s success to his work.
It’s a shame that he is not in charge anymore.
