Was/is TF2 a better game?

I now it is old and OW is a clone but is the original better?

Old vs New

OW isn’t a clone, it’s the same category.

Strange…I don’t remember taking my time machine back to 2016…

Jokes aside though, as someone who has thousands of hours on both games, they’re not even comparable beyond “class-based fps”.

Hard to say, different game for a different time.

That’s like asking if Fortnite is a better book than The Hunger Games because they’re both battle royale.

Personally, both are great games. Both have their flaws, but they’re still enjoyable to me. However, if there is one thing that TF2 has over OW is the writing. The voicelines the mercs say are so memorable and still make me laugh.

TF2 was way better than OW. less characters so better balance and the addition of different weapon loadouts to change a character’s abilities for different playstyles was great.

Feels good to reflect a crit rocket back at a soldier or keep everyone topped off with a quick fix. You just dont get those kinds of skill plays in overwatch.

TF2 was… cute when it came out (compared to TF1 and whatsitsname that Military vs Terrorist game that was all the rage for a long time I can’t even remember now). …Edit: Counter Strike. Thanks.

That said, OW kind of blew it out of the water with interesting lore, far more unique characters, and yes, more polished game play.

Overwatch is more comparable to Counter-Strike, really.

To begin with, TF2 was made to be a casual game.
The developers themselves say as much when they talk about the reasoning behind Critical Hits, the nemesis system, and even why the Sniper works the way he does.

(How dare a fps designer say that getting instantly killed out of the blue is something as asinine as “not fun”!? I the hyper skilled sniper need to be “rewarded”!)

I like TF2’s characters and humor better but I prefer OW’s gameplay options (Shield based hero, basic assault rifle hit-scan hero, a variety of healers). We may complain that OW has bare-bones options with supports and tanks but TF2 has 8 DPS and one healer class. We may complain that OW has bugger all content coming in but TF2 only gets update once every YEAR atm.

TF2 is basically played as a death-match with an objective somewhere to the side of it all. OW is basically you MUST play this, if you DONT play this the world will end and the team will hate you.

Would love a middle ground but hey… that’s life.

Nah i played it way before OW and even without any actuall competion that game was anything but fun.
9 classes is just a joke for a 10year+ game, the customization items that affects gameplay is basicly Gaben saying: gimme your wallet or get out.
I find myself bored after 10h and never look up for it ever again.

I wonder why they havent done a TF3

Players have too much invested in their existing TF2 accounts.

That and they’re stuck in what seems like an obsession with VR tech than producing games people will actually want to play.

Valve cannot count to 3.

Duh.

One is polished and has decent gamplay and interesting lore, has characters that the devs spent years refining and a community that is passionate about the game dispute a toxic competitive community.

The other is Overwatch sadly.

HEH, good post! I admin’d a TF2 server and ran it for a NUMBER of years.

Overwatch has it figured out better than TF2 ever did. It became a stale game after a number of years, when they went to “freemium” in essence, anyone could start a steam account, download a copy of TF2, CHEAT and get a VAC ban, all in the same day. Then they started a NEW account, and went back to cheating. Didn’t matter what type of ban you did. It didn’t work, still doesn’t. Just means its always “ban central”. Not only that, but as a Server OWNER, you had to be subscribed to a DDOS mitigation service, along with a high-bandwith VPN to that direct location of your server.

yes, Angry “ban hammered” players, would take it out, anyway they could. Blasting the server with LOIC. as well as any other form of attacks they could, for being unreasonable. Essentially the big names like Skial, Wonka Gaming, Night Team and a large number of other MAJOR servers went away, or shut down MOST of their servers overnight.

The servers were left UN-managed mostly, and the admins that stuck around, used “auto ban” software. THis meant that groups could flush out whomever they wanted, for NO reason.

TF2 servers DID have their GOOD moments, I remember a few that used “spawn protection mods” that either gave Spawned players the invincibility buff for a few seconds, or they used “spawn camp, debuff” (which we used) it was a way to punish spawn campers

What I am THANKFUL for on Overwatch, is they do NOT use “auto balance”. Because suddenly your friend became your FOE. However, they NEVER learned this lesson, when it came to shuffle-balance on matching players into the next game. Which is why I leave after EVERY match. I like a fresh team, that doesn’t know me, or my tactics.

TF2 became “stale” mainly because their LACK of maps put in.

It had more… hats.

The biggest difference is TF2 had more players in a match so games last hours. People just played for fun because you probably stop playing before there was a clear winner and no one cares about balance.

Overwatch has quick matches and things get more salty because people don’t want to see “Defeat” people care WAY more about balance

Idk if it is a better game but TF2 is just boring compared to OW.

TF2 is better because it is causal game so you are free to do what you want without someone tell you to switch and the community is really friendly.

Also hats!!
