A lot of the voice lines seem to be hinted at some sort of romance between them, and I get that it kind of makes sense with the Pharmercy connection, but … didn’t Mercy know Pharah when she was a little kid? Isn’t that a little weird?

To paraphrase it, yeah, the short answer is that highlighting pharmercy is an effective way to take advantage of the less-involved majority of the player base.

And sorta? The spray/pic most commonly refenced for arguments of Mercy knowing child Pharah was canonically taken when Mercy was also a minor (16-17 iirc).
Selfishly I don’t want PharMercy canonized. I’ll get twice the entitled to me pocketing them Pharah’s and I already want her gutted so I can stop dealing with the over entitled ones that exist right now.

But isn’t there just like a 6 year age gap between them? I thought Mercy was like 37 and Pharah is like 31?

They did hint at Genji and Mercy a few years ago. Now they jumped on the Pharah train possibly because it’s one of the most popular ships and with how certain shippers are… it gets sad.

They’ve been hinting at it for a very long time. They also have done the same for Genji though I think they have moved on from that.
It’s actually a slightly smaller gap. Pharah is 32, Angela is 37. Their age gap is not that weird, especially in their 30s imo.

Apparently it is 32 and 37 respectively. So that adds to 5 years gap. Nothing strange here, at one point I was romantically involved with a spouse 7 years younger than myself so eeeh

I agree. It’s not even six years lol. I think IIRC Angela did meet Pharah at some point when they were younger, though at this point in their life they are pretty close in age.

Where like Mercy looks much taller. However, the origin story is that Mercy made a great break through at a young age. So… its possible that Mercy is max height when maybe she’s like 14-16 or something and Pharah being 5yrs younger still has not hit her growth spurt yet. Many people sort of reach max height in 13-15 range. Maybe grow a little taller afterwards.
9 and 14 or 10-15 sort of makes sense in this photo. Though that would still make Mercy this omega genius at that age.

That is true, though I just assume that is partly a hold over from some of the og lore that isn’t 100% accurate any more. Mercy also had voice interactions with Reaper that used to heavily hint and imply she was responsible for his… condition. We know that idea was thrown out entirely when Blizz released Moira.
Even so if it is still canon it could still be explained as you mentioned.
That sounds exactly like the kind of storytelling Blizz likes to be totally honest
