Voice Chat Replays

So Blizzard can save replays but I wonder how difficult it would be to save people being abusive and discriminating on voice chat.

I wish they could, would be fun to listen to the opponents’ voice chat in a replay.

It’s totally infeasible to record voice chat at this point.

The primary reason is law. Several US states, including California (where Blizzard is based), require two-party consent for audio recording. That means in order for Blizzard to store a record of your voice, you would have to explicitly give them permission to do so, and they can’t coerce you into doing that. Before the game released, it might have been a possibility to include consent for audio recording in the terms of service, but doing so would probably result in major public backlash anyway. Now that the game is already released, I don’t see any way it could happen.

The secondary reason is cost. Text takes a small amount of space to store, and audio takes a very large amount of space. As a total wild-guess estimate, a single average player who’s used a mixture of both text and voice chat over the past five years in Overwatch probably generated around 1-2 megabytes worth of text and 4-6 terrabytes of audio. When you multiply that by hundreds of thousands if not millions of players, the cost for storing audio is completely unjustifiable for a company whose primary business is not audio storage. That’s not to mention the potential memory and bandwidth implications on the host servers for the game, which would have to be responsible for decorating and distributing the audio data/metadata for storage.

Personally I’d hate that idea. I’m not interested in having my voice floating around the Blizzard void…

I think it should only be redeemable if someone gets muted and they didn’t use text chat so staff can listen to the voice chat because if you get muted and you were in the voice chat but didn’t type anything in text chat they will just say it won’t be lifted as it was the correct punishment even if they didn’t talk in voice or say anything bad if they did.

Dunno, I’d say that Stasi or a some random country near Taiwan would love this change.

No.

I play in groups sometimes in custom games against each other with us all in the voice chat from both teams. It is a lot of fun to hear the other team. But we are all friends so it doesn’t get toxic, wouldn’t work with randoms.

I know COD allows for teams to talk to each other at the end of the match. In one of the modes called Cyber Attack, teams could briefly talk to each other in between rounds. The trashtalk in those segments is hilarious. It would be amazing if they allow us to do that in OW.

Shocker: it’s legal to say things not politically correct in private conversations. Your voice chat in game falls into this.
