Visual clutter is gonna wreck this game

All this talk about “Valorant this” and “Valorant that” but ignore huge issues that will actually be detrimental to the game. I love OW but my goodness is it an eyesore sometime.

I’m not a Moira or Sym hater but their entire kits is visual diarrhea. Dunno if Papa Jeffs will see this but have you guys been working on toning visual clutter down? Being that you’re doing a pass on the UI for Overwatch 2 and all.

It hurts new players and spectators for OWL. Easier said than done I know, any of you guys have some solutions to help?

I mean boys look at this:

Actually, this is low-key a very important topic. They are updating the visual effects in OW2 (Mercy’s beam is different).

I think they should focus on high resolution, subtle effects on visuals.

For example, the current blood spatter effect is kinda blinding with machine guns (sombra and tracer suffer from this). Grav needs some reductions in its swirls, and sym wall should be more clear and those hexagon patterns should be removed from it.

Widowmakers smg muzzle flash is blinding also, that should be toned down a bit.

Also, I would like to add that if the dev team wants people to enjoy eye-candy ultra effects, they need to simply increase the resolution only for ultra setting effects.

In the current game, ultra effects is blinding. When you get healed there is way too much yellow crosses, sparkles and arrows coming out your butt on ultra.

So if a dev reads this: consider visual clutter for animations, and make sure even ultra effects has the same visual clutter as low effects… Otherwise most of your playerbase won’t even see the work you put into them.

adderallboys alt accounts are now in action

They could tone down Moira crazy ult visual before, it should not be hard to do it to other heroes.

At least give us an option of toning down this cluster fest so we can actually get to see what s going on.

As a sym main, her wall should be the next to get toned down. Those hexagons have extremely thick edges which obscure vision, it should be more like a glass plane anyways. Remove those hexagons please, wall shouldn’t be a smoke screen.

Those would be great starts.
What Heroes do you think contribute most to it?

IMO its:

Moira, Sym, Brig, D.va (Rockets), Mei, Zarya, and Winston

However, there is universal clutter from first person.
(Plus symbols whenever you get healed, Red edging when you receive damage etc.)

Compared to Valorant, OW’s visual clutter is actually tolerable. That being said, they need to fix up some beams, make the POV menu more concise and just reduce the amount of unnecessary visuals in the game. We genuinely do not need a fancy, hexagonal Sym wall. Arguably the worst shape to use.

Do you really think Valorant has more visual clutter? That’s a first. Everyone (including me) was praising how concise and clear the visuals for valorant were. When multiple abilities are used you knew EXACTLY what happened.

Their grenades, walls and other abilities that act more like creative tools are honestly hideous. If the genre is CS:GO type game, it’s arguably hellish to half to deal with multiple different colours popping up out of nowhere. (Solid colours at that. You could just shoot into it and randomly get a kill - not exactly skilful) Plus, some of the walls in the game are just unnecessary. I’m pretty sure either Viper or Phoenix have a wall that’s so long it can extend onto a roof…

I haven’t even gotten onto Viper’s ultimate yet and the fact that almost every agent in the game has some sort of grenade that obscures LoS.

Overall, they just have way too many abilities that have the same purpose.

I guess finding the colors hideous is subjective but I still think they nail how clear and concise it is. And no ya don’t just “shoot randomly”. Smokes in these games are meant to cover rotations and force positioning. I don’t play CS but the interaction with sight denial abilities are much more deeper than that.

Thats a good thing tho! Overwatch should do the same in the future! Having ability overlap allows the game to be naturally diverse since each “hero” has similar utility, just with a good twist.

Too much uniqueness will hurt competitive integrity, but I digress…

They should make ‘barrier opacity’ an option in settings.

The only one that bothers me is Grav. Grav is just a mess to see out of.

Hideous in the sense that they’re solid colours that completely block LoS.

Though, I will say that their graphics are pretty mediocre… It’s my opinion but I don’t think I’m the only one that feels this way. .-.

You can walk through most walls and still shoot through. Hence why i said you can just shoot randomly into a wall and hope to get a kill. Take Viper’s ultimate for example. It’s way too risky to go inside her poison gas rectangle since she has the advantage when you enter. All you really have to do is poke your bullets in logical directions of the gas box and hope to get a kill.

The walls - not the grenades. Imo, the grenades are overkill. Most agents have them in recoloured versions and they can easily stun you too. That and, again, it’s a solid colour. ;-; That’s so vexing in a game where vision is essential.

Is it though? Just looks redundant to me.

Meh. Hopefully they don’t approach this like Valorant. I’m not keen on just having retextured grenades and walls on each different hero.

Aw, but I like boosting into people guns blazing and getting blinded by a neon green disco explosion.

This. I struggle to pay attention to key details because of some effects. I set everything to low just to deal with it.

Not uncommon. Most pros set the graphics to low when they’re playing games.

RE: The rest of this thread
Its got its epilepsy warning when you started playing and in the User Agreement. While I agree with the visual clutter, the fix is to turn down your graphics.

I see some of the Valorent videos have explosions and smoke screens you can’t even see through.
It looks like CfortSnite

Moira’s ultimate is so annoying because it literally makes it impossible to see her head (and sometimes just her entire body) in it.

Viper, Jett ans Sage makes everything look like the GPU is artifacting in Valorant. Those three characters need a serious overhaul to the VFX.
For all the talk about how Valorant is designed to have as little clutter as possible, the gas traps, the liquid walls, the WALLBANG FLASHBAG, Valorant is actually going through the same problem Overwatch has of overwhelming visual noise.

On a side note… Can we maybe ease up on the link restrictions for long time active members in good standing?
