I strongly believe it would be a good addition to have an optional setting that lets you, the player, know exactly how much damage you do with weapons and abilities by showing visible numbers near enemies that you are damaging.
Team Fortress 2 has a setting like this and back then when I played the game many years ago, I found the setting to be incredibly useful and liked it a lot, since the game overall has so many different weapons. OW2 has of course many different heroes too, with unique weapons as well as abilities that deal damage and knowing balance changes happen now and then with tweaks here and there, for me it’s sometimes hard to keep track and remember exactly how much each attack deals damage.
It’s also true that for some weapons this setting might not be all that useful, like for Reinhardt’s hammer, as the damage there stays pretty much the same. But when looking at Ashe’s or Cassidy’s weapons, I think the option would be really helpful, as their damage does not really stay the same. The weapons could be damage boosted or you might score a headshot. Not to mention their damage falloff is based on distance and recently even Cassidy received a buff for his damage falloff.
Once again I would love this to be an optional setting available for everyone to use if they so desire. However, if this really, really cannot be implemented for QP and / or competitive mode for whatever reason, I think at the very least, this should be available on training room.
Example video from TF2, not my video.

Training room, yes. Live matches, no.
There are already complaints of visual clutter in the game adding more, universally, not only exacerbates the problem but might also be taxing on a technical level (accounting for all players and spectator mode)

I see no problem with it being an option for live matches. If only the person uses it sees it then the visual clutter doesn’t matter.
I really dislike when people use that argument towards systems that don’t need to include everyone and can be totally ignored.
@ abilities changing colors only for the user cough cough

I see no problem with it for as long as there is the option to turn it on or off, default being off for clutter sake.
I feel it’d be nice to see what level of impact i am doing with my weapons and stuff. Maybe also extend this for healing as a separate setting?

Unnecessary visual clutter. you already see their health bar

Watch this thread become:
“I personally don’t like/want/need it so the game shouldn’t have it”
Personally? I wouldn’t want it for myself but all the power to those that do.

I would love having the Option of being able to see Damage / Healing numbers , if the end user can toggle them on/off in setting menus.
It might be visual clutter to some , and having the option to turn on and off the numbers would be a necessity to please people on both sides of this argument.
But in my opinion it would be a welcome change for those who want to tweak their own gameplay and be more competitive.

So long as its toggled and you don’t read numbers from other players.
Numbers flashing onscreen is unnecessary data since if you are competitive, you will research all the data and memorize beforehand. But then again, the following explains why visible damage numbers are so appealing:
I think for most people it would be too much clutter.
No downside to it being an option you can turn on tho

Thanks for the replies. And yes, I want to make it very clear in case of confusion; I’d like this to be an option for people, who might get some use out of it, but definitely would not want this to be a new game feature with no ability to change or turn off. Just an option for those who would like to use it now and then.

I think it would be helpful, especially for players who don’t play certain roles a lot or for those who like to see numbers and tweak their gameplay to increase them.
Just client side, not global. Not everyone needs to see numbers.
I think there’s a workshop/custom games option for it, so it wouldn’t be hard to implement for a toggle.
This would be great for knowing how much damage/healing your hero does. You currently can’t find that information in game.
Now add reactions to that, “melt” with Ashe and Mei gonna hit hard lol
Who are you to say what I find clutter, why does it matter if it’s by player option
Yeah exactly, you are right. Why also have option for subtitles when you already can hear what each character says…
Strongly in favor of options to enable damage numbers (default off is sensible).
I’m also strongly in favor of games including full data tables for weapons/skills directly in game.
I see no good reason games shouldn’t directly tell players exact damage ranges, falloff values, projectile speeds, etc. Not a fan of having to depend on external sources for basic numerical information.
Fighting games are starting to get good about doing this with frame data; why can’t FPSes and other types of games?
Funny enough it wasn’t until somebody made damage numbers show with workshop that Brigs rally armor bug was discovered.

For this reason alone I can’t see why it would be a bad idea on a toggle.

I’ve been asking for this the moment I installed overwatch 1 , which was like 4 yrs ago
At the very least, they should change it to where when you press F1 to look at your hero’s abilities, it shows the amount of damage your primary weapon/abilities/ult does.
No idea why there aren’t hard numbers like that shown in the game.

just all 4 of your team say ANYTHING from the wheel it makes a whole new marker on my screen. I don’t know why they feel the need to mark on the screen where someone is saying HELLO to me.
I definetly don’t need more visual clutter.
