I get the argument that switching to counter another hero is the best strategy. Or that if you’re being countered, you should switch. But how can you improve if you always take the easy way out? You can only get better if you push yourself.
For example, I’m a Sym main. If I swapped off Sym every time I played against Winston or Pharah, I wouldnt be as skilled with her as I am today (currently Masters, but peaked at 4150SR) Choosing not to switch heroes has taught me discipline and control. I feel like if you wanna get better at Overwatch, constantly switching heroes to counter is unhealthy and detrimental to your skill

it was until they made 2-2-2 and overbuff heroes exist

if the enemy plays a someone who is designed to counter your hero you always switch imo
as someone who thought running soldier during the peak of 2x shield was a good idea, I agree!
Both are valid strategies. In my experience, flex players work better in solo queue due to being adaptable. If you can form a group though, one tricks are way better. They know their hero much better than a flex player knows them, and if you play to enable them they usually do great. Even in solo queue, I try to enable one tricks I get on my team as they are more reliable on their hero than flex players

switching doesnt make you better…
being able to play several heroes does as it allows you to comfortably do said switching to a more suitable counter
if you continue to bring a sword to the gunfight youre probably going to run into problems (and im just using that as a metaphor since i know that the current sword-wielding hero in the game is the strongest dps
… the irony)

Unpopular opinion: people who don’t improve from switching have a poor understanding of the game that they need to work on. Playing other characters shows new perspectives that make me play better on my mains. I say this as an ex onetrick.

It can become a game of never-ending switching, sounds boring tbh.
Some players would flip backward for the win in the now at all cost. Other players play to get the win in the future, against all odds.
One requires pressing H, the other requires some serious efforts to overcome adversity.
meh. the game system is literally structured around countering. it’s not about proving i’m e-rambo on a single character who can do anything (because there are few characters who can), it’s more about securing the win and supporting my team as best i can, and that entails making conscious decisions about how to counter a problematic enemy, or at the very least increase my own survivability so it’s not a 5v6.

You don’t improve in this game by pig headedly playing just one hero under any circumstance. This is an objective based game designed around counter swapping. You improve by becoming more fluid with the heros in your arsenal.

Hey you know what helps you win against all odds? Having a diverse enough arsenal of heroes so odds are never all against you.

I mean Stevoo has been a gm sym onetrick since season 1, so if it works then so be it.
You’re absolutely right. Having 32 heros has done wonders for balancing issues.

Sticking to one character also doesn’t mean that you are guaranteed to do well with that character. It also doesn’t make you a better teammate.
It’s not the “easy” way out though. If you don’t swap to a counter, you’re just making it harder for yourself. You’re not actually playing a fair match up. Switching to a counter puts you on a better playing field and also showcases your ability to adapt to your situation. Aka, skill.

Oh and what would you flex into to counter a widow that s hitting shots? What would you flex into to counter a good Genji or good McCree/Ashe or Pharmercy?
If you dont build the necessary skills, pressing H and picking up some hero doesn’t magically give you the advantage.
At some point the heroes will stop carrying you, and you will just lose to a better player no matter what you are trying to pick

And what happened when the hero that you need for the situation requires a lot of skills, which you don’t have? What would you do then?
Theoretically Widow counters Pharmercy better than any other hitscan, but only a small percentage players can do it, your average flex players wont even hit a body on that Pharah, let alone killing her with a pocket.

To the appropriate heroes that can counter them.
It does. That is exactly what pressing H in a game balanced around counter picking does. It gives you an advantage.
You will lose to a better player no matter how much you one trick. Someone is always going to be better than you
