Unpopular opinion, but Mercy is just plain boring to play now

Please, hear me out. I understand that Mercy is in a good spot balance wise right now. But God, at what cost? She’s just a heal bot. Where is the skill expression? Please don’t say positioning, because that’s true of almost all heroes.

Something needs to change with her kit, and I think it’s her ult. It is not skillful to use at all. It’s basically a “Win this fight button”. You just keep your beam on someone, anyone. Doesn’t matter who because it it will just spread to everyone. I would MUCH rather her ult have like 2-3x healing strength but still only single target, that way I can fulfill the fantasy of an actual guardian angel, zipping around the map topping off teammates. This way I actually have to put thought into who I was going to prioritize healing.

The way to go, however, is MOST DEFINITELY NOT to return her old ultimate. I hear a lot of Mercy mains on these boards throwing this idea around. Was it a fun ultimate to use? Sure. Was it fun to play against? Nope. It encouraged a playstyle that was exactly opposite to Mercy’s theme. Hide n rez was definitely an abusable tactic that was toxic and unhealthy for the game.

I’m going to be honest. I love Resurrect. I think it’s a cool Mechanic. HOWEVER, if I had to give up resurrect for an iteration of Mercy that is fun to play both as and against, I would be completely fine. Yeah I miss the days of 5 man resurrects, or hell I even like rezzing now the one time a game I get to actually do it (exaggeration), but the mechanic is really holding Mercy back. Is it time for it to go?

TL;DR

Mercy is in a good spot balance wise, but she’s boring as all hell to play. She has no skill expression. Either change her ultimate to a form where she is not healing literally everyone or rework her entirely and remove resurrect.

“unpopular” lol

It’s not an unpopular opinion! I’m sure many people agree with you, based on the threads I’ve seen!

I, for one, do have fun playing her, though. I hadn’t played a lot of games beforehand picking up OW so playing Mercy made me feel like I could actually contribute to the overall game, even with my noob aim

Mercy actually is in a very bad spot balance wise. She is by far the strongest support in the game and is more or less required to win in the higher tiers on most maps.

You could honestly remove rez from Mercy’s kit and she would still have a niche on some maps where the reliability of her heal and damage boost is good.

Oh, I didn’t know that. Isn’t that all the more reason for change, though?

She’s always been one. :man_shrugging:

It’s not an unpopular opinon. The Unpopular part is how people want to fix her boring gameplay. I, like many others, want Mass Rez back. Others insist she’s fun and fine.

she was always boring, her core kit is boring. this has nothing to do with an ult.

i dont see why people complain about the ult taking away her fun. thats about 5 secs in a whole game.

You may want to have rez out and that’s completely fine but imagine the outrage with threads like ‘it was her identity, why don’t you take McCree’s high noon out of game huh? would you like that?’

I get what you mean! Before Overwatch, I played a lot of games like League of Legends, Don’t Starve, Left 4 Dead, etc…games that didn’t require aim. When I started playing Overwatch, I had a rude awakening lol. Heroes like Mercy provided that accessibility to the game for people like me who weren’t used to snapping onto heads. However, as I played more and more of the game, I started to sharpen my skills and expand my roster to heroes like Ana, Lucio, and Zenyatta. While I did not NEED to play Mercy anymore, I still found her to be very fun. I liked zipping around the map and pulling off clutch rezzes. I liked having to prioritize who I healed or resurrected and being rewarded for that.

However, it feels to me like Mercy players now fall into two distinct groups.

Group A: People who abuse her for sr

Group B: People who aren’t very good at aiming (no offense)

I feel like there is a very, very small group of people who pick Mercy because she is just a blast to play. She definitely used to be, but Old Resurrect and Valkyrie are inherently flawed, giving her too much power that did not require a lot of skill or thinking to play her. She just needs more skill expression IMO, something to separate the good Mercy players from the bad.

I’m glad you like playing Mercy though! She’s a very interesting character, and I think all the ideas are there to make a fun and engaging hero. She just needs a little bit of work, that’s all.

Lol that’s true, I feel like she was put in a really awkward spot balance-wise with her rework. I used to think she’d be stuck in her current state, and then Symmetra taught me that heroes can be reworked twice, so…there’s hope XD

I’m sorry, I don’t understand your post. Could you maybe reword that second part for me?

You can learn to abuse GA
There is your skill expansion, you can do some crazy stuff if you use it properly… thats basically it… yea… (but I enjoy playing Mercy after all)

Mercys problem is that she cant do any “great” plays. Since mass rez and insta rezz got deleted all you do is healing your team all night long
There is no space for any great plays where you can actually be proud of yourself and you’re team can say “Great job, you just saved us the game!”
Even Ana, who has a simliar problem, can sleep an ulting genji or soldier or an rein who just pinned someone. She can anti the whole enemy team, shutting down their Zen’s trans, etcpp
Zen could do a teamkill on his own, Lucio can boop 1…2…3… people of a cliff every 4 second or simply safe teammates with it by booping away a genji or a Rein who just used his ult. Basically every support has the opportunity to do a “great play” even if its just Moira who chases after 2 10Hp targets
While Mercy… “great rez” (after a teamfight is most likely already won), thats it

Soon it should be a part of the megatrash.

I wholeheartedly agree. There is never a place for Mercy to actually shine. She’s missing her big “Hero moment”.

What you think would happen if they gave Mercy no slowdown during the 1.75 seconds rez.

But no perma-regen during her Ultimate, and no extended range on heal beams.

She would stay overpowered but just feel clunky. Valk isn’t what makes mercy op. Its her inherent player advantage she provides a team. A team without a mercy has 6 players who can do work. A team with a Mercy has 6 + 1 redo. It makes it so losing a hero at the start of the fight isn’t a loss.

She will forever be overpowered with rez unless they somehow made Mercy’s basekit worth less than half a hero, and nobody wants her to feel that bad.

Hint: there’s a lot other heroes you can play.
