If you have to revert it later than really who cares because A rein/winston is the only playable shield tank solo, orisa sig need a second shield or are worthless.
And B double off tank is a throw pick everywhere. “oh but I run it in my games and it works” says the random zarya main without proof to any of their claims meanwhile literally everyone else agrees that 99% of the time double off tank doesn’t work.
You can’t ever buff orisa or sigma shield again so long as the threat of Shield Stacking is in the game but if you remove players ability to play 2 shields at once by having the tank role divided by off tank and main tank.
Is it the best solution? No but it will allow you to revert some of the changes to orisa and sigma and get more main tanks for the time being since I think a lot more people would play shield tank if they could use Orisa or Sigma without needing a second shield.
And again you can always revert this later if your new tanks won’t line up with this system. Cause lets face it, you’re not release OW2 or any of the new heroes it comes with til the end of the year/6 more months of hemorrhaging your playerbase.
Yes this is a rant, no it’s not a longterm solution, but there again we’re not getting any new heroes or tanks until most likely blizzcon if not even later. And you’re not getting new players in that are playing tanks, it’s been a while. Want more tanks players in the game? Fix orisa sigma and remove the ability to stack 2 shields together.
I’d point out that as much as players on ladder refuse to accept. Wrecking ball functions as a main tank in any team with some semblance of coordination. There was literally a comp a team in tournaments I cast has run that was Ball Zarya plus Sombra Doom and they absolutely steamrolled with it. They copied chengdu after they did it.
I can feel the essay responses from people who hate anyone who even considers playing ball coming.
yet again, 1% of the time he doesn’t work with any other tanks that don’t have a shield when running the whole game that way. This isn’t just about the double off tank problem tho, tbh I don’t see that run too much when it does it hurts like hell but I’m done trying to convince my off tank to switch after giving them everything i could offer to suceed, it fails and they still won’t switch. Just like how the DPS 1 trick is a 1 trick off tank is 1 trick role.
I digress, this is about getting more tank players in the game because the obvious lack of them. And personally I firmly believe that limiting Shield Tank, and non-shield tank into 2 roles and then buffing sig/orisa to compensate would get more people willing to play main tanks in the roll.
We’re close to a year now with role que and no tank players. I’m not seeing any other viable solutions even if temporary to getting more tank players.
I just won a game with double off tank and a game 2 or 3 games ago as well. will post replay codes on request .
Also people sleep on halt pile drive.

You’re worried about getting more tank players/the low amount of tank options yet you want to divide it up further to a pool of 3-4 heroes each. That will only make the problems worse.
Yes most organized teams have a main and an off tank player but they also have a hitscan dps and a projectile dps as well as a main and flex support. If you want to make it a 1-1-2-2 then you may as well go all the way and split it like organized teams do. And if that sounds like a bad idea it’s better than just splitting the tanks.
General note. The game needs more flexibility/agency, not less. Both in every role but also from the players as a whole. If we can’t all try to learn all the heroes in the game to some extent, then we won’t understand the mentality of players on that hero and what they try to do/what they go through.
nope dividng the pool in half. winston sigma orisa rein as the main tanks the others as off. We can argue what’s main and what’s not all we want but for the sake of not doing that Shield tanks and non-shield tanks.
Pure speculation. this is what experimental card is for. Remember how 1-3-2 was experimented with and showed great results in making more evened que times across the board even in it’s later stages.
Honestly I ask only for the attempt of this idea in the experimental for least a month to see if the model sustains. if it doesn’t then they tried. We all know there’s not enough tanks being played, personally I think, and here from everyone I talk to, is that they don’t want to play tank becuase Reinhardt is boring as hell. I know tank role wasn’t as lacking in people today back during double barrier cause you could play orisa sig. Sure later you were forced to play em both but again proof was in the pudding those 2 tanks gathered more tank players.
Now it’s Reinwatch and no surprise people don’t want to play tank only to be at a disadvantage most of the time cause the enemy has a rein and you don’t. (keyword disadvantage)
That showing results on even queue times is like saying a new hero shows people wanting to play a role more/less. The tanks received most of the changes on the card so most people went to the card wanting to try the new tanks. If it went live that effect may happen for a week or two but slowly it would return to normal.
People aren’t not playing tank because Rein is boring. Honestly he’s one of the more enjoyable tanks to play if you don’t play like a shield bot. People don’t want to play tanks because their survivability has been gutted and they’re generally the most punishing role in the game to play above all the others. Yes tanks can be strong but unless your entire team is coordinated in some way, there are several situations where you just can only sit and pray your team deals with it.
Honestly I used to love playing tank from time to time on certain maps. But that’s the most map dependent role there is. Yes some heroes on each role will be stronger on certain maps, but tanks have the biggest problem with being disproportionately worse on certain maps/matchups. At least in open queue I can only play tank when it’s on a map I’m actually good at tanking on. Same goes for support and damage. Like I said, the game and community needs to be more flexible not less.
