Unhandled Exception on Launch of Overwatch

I’ve posted about this before, 3 months ago and haven’t gotten anywhere. As soon as I run Overwatch it pops up a dialogue that says “Unhandled exception” and then in the box it says “An unexpected error occurred.”

I’m running on an MSI Stealth AI 16 laptop, which is brand new and has an NVidia GeForce RTX 4070.

I’ve updated every driver, reinstalled my OS, ran every repair for the game, reinstalled the game, and tried running the game with every type of compatibility. Uninstalling Razer software does not help.

I’ve been unable to play Overwatch for 3 months now and it just seems like there’s no solution, but even worse, nobody even has a clue on how to even troubleshoot this. No logs are being created to indicate what is going on. Opened a ticket with support and they said to post on the forums, but nothing has helped, so far.

I’m completely stuck and baffled what to even do next.

Are you blocking some of the server IP addresses?

Are you running the game and/or Bnet as admin?

What would the server addresses be for me to even check? FWIW I added the Overwatch.exe to my Windows Firewall Outbound rule and had it set to allow everything on it. And the default Inbound rules for Overwatch are in there.
And yes I’ve tried running as Administrator.

Also, just for discussion purposes, this is the only game that I’ve tried that has this issue. Marvel Rivals, WoW and other games work just fine.

One other thing is when it fails, I can go into Task Manager and I see Overwatch Application running there. After multiple trying and failing multiple times I’ll have a copy of Overwatch Application running in TM for each instance, although the game never launches.

They don’t provide them publicly, but I know there were Reddit threads of IPs that players were intentionally blocking, so that’s why I asked.

Sounds like something concerning the install is corrupted. Maybe the directory permissions or something.

I recommend checking the many threads about this error on Reddit, since it can be caused by over 10 different situations.

Even with a complete OS reinstall you’d think the directory permissions could be messed up? Seems unlikely to me.

I checked through Reddit and did not come up with any solutions. Honestly there’s only about maybe 5 or 6 threads with the “unhandled exception” issue and those are all simple, ridiculous fixes like “reinstall drivers”. That doesn’t help.

Clearly nobody has any idea how to fix this crash.

I did have a thought and will try installing from Steam and see if THAT works.

[UPDATE] It works in Steam. Why it will launch there and not from the Blizzard browser, I’ll never know. But maybe this will help someone in the future…
